y career as a fitness instructor gives me an opportunity to speak
with people who spend their life's work learning about American Health habits.
I was shocked to discover that with the growth of cable TV, computer use,
and video games, exercise and quality family time are no longer receiving the attention
they require. In our country today (despite the emphasis on health and fitness that
we see in the media), our children are less fit than ever before, our sedentary
lifestyles are catching up. Let's turn that around. We need to start by asking
ourselves how family fitness can become a priority, and how we can accomplish a
program that strengthens family bonds and gets everyone healthier. For many years
sports participation was an integral part of American life. Our electronic age makes
life go faster, but the cost, loss of recreational time, is great. |
| | Family fitness starts
with good nutrition. Parents must make sure that their children eat correctly. They have
access to so many junk foods outside the home that we must be very diligent and cautious
when we stock the pantry and the refrigerator. Parents, remember to never use food as a
reward. Teach your family to think of food as fuel. The rewards
of family fitness are invaluable. Playing together (while always considering
the fitness level of each participant so that everyone is challenged, but no one is
embarrassed), builds confidence, encourages healthy habits, and demonstrates to your
family that they are your number one priority. How we accomplish these
goals is what the Family Fitness section is all about.
