Contacting Hummingbird

New Features

This section describes the new features available for HostExplorerTM 7.1 and HostExplorer Deployment WizardTM 7.1. For information on the features added in previous releases, contact your Hummingbird sales representative.

General

Accessibility

All Hummingbird Host Access products have been upgraded to be accessible to all users. Wherever possible, our software uses Microsoft Windows interface standards and contains a comprehensive set of accessibility features. For more information, see the introductory chapter of your Hummingbird product manual.

Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack

You can now purchase a new add-on product for your Hummingbird Host Access version 7.1 products. The Hummingbird Connectivity Security PackTM provides highly secure TCP tunnels for communications between clients and hosts on a network. Security Pack lets users running Xstart, HostExplorerTM, FTP for Windows Explorer, and FTP log in over a secure channel to another computer on the network and execute commands on the remote machine or transfer files between machines.

Support for Windows Millenium Edition (Me) and Windows XP

All HostExplorer products now support Windows Me, in addition to Windows NT/95/98/2000. HostExplorer products will support Windows XP in the future, at which time information about this new platform support will be available at the following web site:

www.hummingbird.com

Microsoft Windows TSE Installation Support

You can now install Hummingbird Host Access products (except HostExplorer Deployment Wizard) on a Terminal Server, using the link in Hummingbird Master Setup and provide immediate access to all connnected Terminal Server Clients. Some products require a transform file to be applied during the installation and should be launched from a command line instead of from the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. For details on this installation scenario, consult the product manual. The Hummingbird product line supports installations on Windows NT 4.0 Server Terminal Server Edition (including Citrix MetaFrame) and Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services.

New User Manager for Windows TSE Installations

Hummingbird also provides the Hummingbird User Manager, which lets you customize the shortcuts and functionality available to each user profile on the Terminal Server. You can access the User Manager under System32\Hummingbird\Connectivity on the system drive. For more information, see User Manager Help.

Microsoft Windows Installer

Windows Installer is an operating system service developed by Microsoft. It improves the installation of programs, makes software deployment on corporate networks easier, and solves common problems such as shared DLL conflicts.

Windows Installer lets product components install separately (providing complete granularity or level of detail). The following Hummingbird products make use of Windows Installer:
  • Exceed
  • Exceed XDK
  • Exceed 3D
  • Exceed PowerSuite
  • HostExplorer
  • HostExplorer Deployment Wizard
  • FTP for Windows Explorer
  • Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack
  • NFS Maestro Client
  • NFS Maestro Solo
  • NFS Maestro Gateway
  • NFS Maestro Server
  • Inetd
  • SOCKS

Version 7.1 products have the following installation features:

Advertised Support

Hummingbird products support Advertised installations for certain features. Windows Installer registers the application, creates shortcuts and menu entries, and associates file types without actually copying the application files to the computer. If the user, or another application, tries to access an advertised program, the program installs on demand.

Migration Support

Version 6.2 User Profiles

You can preserve user profiles for version 6.2 Hummingbird products. If you are upgrading the same (single) product from version 6.2 to version 7.1, Setup Wizard will backup user profiles and automatically uninstall the version 6.2 product.

User profiles for multiple version 6.2 products can be preserved, but the products are not automatically uninstalled. These must be uninstalled manually before installing version 7.1. Hummingbird Setup Wizard does not preserve user profiles for product versions prior to 6.2. You must manually uninstall all such products before installing version 7.1.

Migration of user profiles:

  1. Version 6.2 products are detected.
  2. User files are saved for each product.
  3. The number of products is detected.
  4. If Setup Wizard does not detect any older product versions, you are prompted to restore the version 6.2 profiles previously saved or use the default 7.1 profiles and settings.
  5. Installation of the version 7.1 Hummingbird product proceeds to completion. Your version 6.2 profiles are available when you run the version 7.1 product.

Version 7.0 User Profiles

Hummingbird version 7.1 products will automatically replace a previously installed 7.0 version of the same product. All settings are preserved in a backup location, and any settings that are applicable to the newly installed features of version 7.1 are migrated.

In cases where an upgrade is not possible, the version 7.1 product installs side-by-side with existing products.

Note: Some products do not support side-by-side installationIf a migration from version 6.2 to 7.0 was disabled to allow side-by-side installation of a product, an upgrade from version 7.0 to 7.1 is possible, but the 7.0 settings are migrated instead of the 6.2 settings.

Integrated Host Access Solutions Product Family

All Hummingbird products are installed by default into a common folder accessible from both the Windows Start menu and a shortcut on the desktop.

Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Support

SMS support is available directly in Windows Installer. Hummingbird provides package definition files with each product to make it easier to install using SMS.

HostExplorer

Quick Scripts

You can now create and modify Quick Scripts using Quick Script Editor. Quick Scripts consist of commands that can automate tedious and repetitive tasks such as entering your user name and password into a login screen. HostExplorer lets you assign these Quick Scripts to keyboard mappings, mouse actions, hotspots, toolbar buttons, and the track menu.

Added Security

HostExplorer now provides Secure Shell encryption of all traffic between the server and the client on a Telnet terminal. This feature is available only if you have Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack installed. The Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack is an add-on implementation of the IETF Secure Shell standard. For more information, refer to the Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack User's Guide.

HostExplorer also provides a General category in the Security folder of the Session Profile dialog box. This category lets you specify the method for securing traffic between the server and the client. In previous versions, you could select only the Kerberos option, which provides authentication and secures traffic between the server and the client for 3270 and Telnet terminals. In the future, you will have the option of selecting the SSL/TLS option, which encrypts all traffic between the server and the client on 3270, 5250, and Telnet terminals. Currently, this option is dimmed in the dialog box.

In addition, the following new API methods/properties/data types are available to support the new security option:

Enhanced Toolbar Functionality

Using the Toolbars dialog box, you can now enlarge the size of toolbar buttons on the host session window. In addition, you can change the image of the toolbar button to one supplied by HostExplorer or your own customized image.

Sample Scripts Available

HostExplorer now provides sample programs for COM objects, OHIO, and Quick Scripts that you can use as programming aids. These sample files are located in their corresponding directory in the following location:

drive:\Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity
\7.10\HostExplorer\Sdk\Samples\SampleType

where drive is the drive on which you installed HostExplorer. SampleType is the name of the directory that contains the samples, for example, COMObjects.

To use the sample executables included in the directories within the COM objects and OHIO directories, you need to have either one of the following installed on your system:

For more infomation about these requirements, see the readme.txt file located in the COMObjects and OHIO directories.

Enhanced VT Printing

This version of HostExplorer provides more printing functionality for the Telnet terminal, such as sending initialization and deinitialization strings to the printer for passthru printing and disabling printer translation.

New OLE Method

The method "Open" has been added to the Hosts object. This method lets you start a new session from a profile saved on disk or create a new session from scratch.

Overriding Translate Settings

HostExplorer provides a new session option, Custom Transfer Table, which you can modify in the Profile section of the session profile file (.hep). This Custom Transfer Table entry lets you override translate settings of the code pages specified in the Code Pages category of the File Transfer folder in the Session Profile dialog box.

5250 File Transfer Wizard

HostExplorer now provides a wizard that lets you transfer structured data files between a PC and an AS/400 host. If you transfer a file from an AS/400 host to your PC, you can specify standard SQL statements for execution.

FTP for Windows Explorer

FTP for Windows Explorer is a client implementation of the File Transfer Protocol. It lets you transfer both text (ASCII) and image (binary) files between your PC and a remote computer running a server implementation of FTP. You can also use it to perform file and directory management on your PC and a remote computer.

FTP for Windows Explorer supports Solaris, SunOS, AIX, Windows NT/2000, AS/400, VMS, VM/CMS, MVS, and VM/VPS, HP-UX, BSD, Chameleon FTP Daemon, DAS9, Data General, GCOS, Hummingbird FTP Daemon, MSDOS, MVS, includes OpenEdition, MVS JES, NetTerm, NetWare, OS/2, OS 9, Tandem, Unix, VMS-UCX 1.3, VOS, VSE - Native Mode, VSE - Unix Emulation Mode, Windows NT 3.5x to 4.

Hummingbird Neighborhood

Hummingbird Neighborhood is an extension of Windows Explorer that lets you access and manipulate the profiles and folders associated with Hummingbird applications such as HostExplorer, the 5250 File Transfer Wizard, and FTP for Windows Explorer. Hummingbird Neighborhood is fully embedded within Windows Explorer.

Like Windows Explorer, Hummingbird Neighborhood provides copy-and-paste, drag-and-drop, delete, and launch features.

Macro & Profile Converter

Macro & Profile Converter is a new utility that lets you convert Wall Data RUMBA or Attachmate EXTRA! macros into Hummingbird Basic macros and Attachmate EXTRA! profiles into HostExplorer session profiles.

HostExplorer Deployment Wizard

HostExplorer Projects Update Wizard

The HostExplorer Projects Update Wizard is a new component of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard that lets you select deployment projects that you want to upgrade from one product version to another, so that the generated directory structure and contents contain the new and/or changed files.

To launch the HostExplorer Projects Update Wizard:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. Click Browse, and navigate to the hewebwiz.exe file where your program files are stored on your machine.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Add a -u string at the end of the path name. The following is an example of the command line syntax:

    "C:\Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
    7.10\HostExplorer\hewebwiz.exe" -u

  5. Click OK.

New API and Macro Support

The new version of HostExplorer Deployment Wizard provides support for the automation of tedious tasks through selectable features in the Enable Features screen.

Quick-Keys, Quick Scripts, and Macros

The features that the administrator selects on this screen become available to the end user in the host session window when they run a web-deployed installation of HostExplorer on their machine:

API Support

The HostExplorer Deployment Wizard also provides support for APIs that let end users automate and use HostExplorer functionality from within their own programs and scripts. The wizard supports the following types of APIs:

Less Dependence on Web Server Availability

With the previous version of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard, there was a risk that an end user might not be able to run a deployed installation of HostExplorer if the web server connection was unavailable. With the new version of the deployment wizard, the administrator can select Open Connection and Save Connection as features available to the end user when HostExplorer is deployed over the Web. These features are available in the Enable Features screen as check boxes under the File check box.

Although the web server must be available when the end user saves a connection, the web server does not need to be contacted when the user opens sessions and connections, and saves sessions. Therefore, if you modify data .cab files, the files will not overwrite modified session profile information in a session saved by a user, but they will overwrite modified profile information in a connection saved by a user. Also, if you modify program .cab files, they will automatically update sessions and connections saved by the user when the web server is available.

The valid file types for saving connections and sessions in a web-deployed installation of HostExplorer are as follows:
Saved Connection Saved Session
HTML Files .HC3, .HC5, .HCV .HE3, .HE5, .HEV
Document Files .HA3, .HA5, .HAV .HB3, .HB5, .HBV

Web Portability

The new version of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard allows the generated project files (for example, project HTML page, .cab files, images) to be portable across the Web for added flexibility.

In the previous version, the administrator specifies the web server address and HTML virtual directory in the Web Server Information screen. Now the administrator can place the output files in any web server directory, in any HTML virtual directory, and can specify relative path names to directories using the HTML Directory Path box. However, administrators must recursively copy the output directory to the HTML virtual directory (if they have not mapped the directory path to a Windows drive letter).

Note: When creating index pages, you need to make sure that the generated HTML index page is in the same output directory as the specified deployment projects. Otherwise, links in the index page may be broken.

5250 File Transfer Wizard

Administrators can now make the 5250 File Transfer Wizard available to end users of the deployed installation of HostExplorer. For a 5250 deployment project, the administrator must select the Transfer feature on the Enable Features screen.

The 5250 File Transfer Wizard lets you transfer structured data files between a PC and an AS/400 host. If you transfer a file from an AS/400 host to your PC, you can specify standard SQL statements for execution.

Support for 3270 and 5250 Printing

The new version of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard lets you select PrintExplorer as a feature in the Enable Features screen. This feature lets end users print data for the 3270 and 5250 terminals using the PrintExplorer component.

Signature Options

When you install the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard, a series of pre-packaged .cab files are also installed, which can then be downloaded to end user machines. These files are digitally signed by Hummingbird to assure users of the integrity and authenticity of the downloaded code.

If you want to sign the .cab files with your own certificate, the .cab files must be repackaged to include this new information. The HostExplorer Deployment Wizard does the repackaging automatically, but it requires the following on your machine:

Microsoft Authenticode ActiveX SDK

The Microsoft Authenticode ActiveX software development kit provides the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard with the necessary tools for resigning .cab files.

See Authenticode SDK for information about obtaining a copy of this software.

SPC and PVK Files

A Software Publisher Certificate (.spc) file contains multiple certificates conforming to the industry standard X.509 certificate format with Version 3 extensions. The only way to receive an .spc file is to apply for one from an accredited certification authority. For information about applying for a certificate, see the following web site:

http://www.verisign.com

If you meet the criteria for a publishing certificate and are granted an .spc file, you can specify it while using the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard. The wizard distributes the .spc in a digital signature with the .cab files to identify you as the publisher and provide your public key. The wizard also contacts the certification authority for verification, so you must have an active web connection on your computer.

A Private Key (.pvk) file contains your company's private key. The HostExplorer Deployment Wizard uses this key to encrypt the digest into the signature block. This key is never exposed to an outside party.

Jconfig

HostExplorer Service--New VT Printing and General Security Options for 3270, 5250, and VT

You can now use the Jconfig HostExplorer Service to do the following:

Sconfig

New features added to the Sconfig utility allow for a more customized installation of your Hummingbird product for user groups with different needs. With Sconfig you can now set custom files, custom registry keys, and shortcuts. For more information, see Sconfig Help.

SOCKS

SOCKS client V4 and V5 are available on the Hummingbird product CD in the SOCKS folder and on the Hummingbird web site. To get SOCKS information, on the Start menu, navigate to System Administration and click SOCKS Information.

Discontinued Features

HostExplorer

This section lists and describes features that have been discontinued for HostExplorer 7.1.

HostExplorer Tuner

This version of HostExplorer no longer supports HostExplorer Tuner.

American Library Association (ALA) Support

This version of HostExplorer no longer supports ALA. Accordingly, the ALA category in the Terminal folder for session options no longer appears.

Known Issues

This section describes issues that Hummingbird is aware of at the time of release.

General

Issues with MIT Kerberos for Windows
Client 2.1 and 2.0 in a Windows TSE Environment

You may experience problems with MIT Kerberos for Windows Client 2.0 and 2.1 in a Windows TSE environment (Windows NT 4.0 Server Terminal Server Edition or Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services). When MIT Kerberos Client 2.0 or 2.1 Setup tries to install configuration files into the Windows or Windows\System32 directories, Windows TSE installs them into user profile directories instead, without adding the new path to the system path. As a result, the application cannot access the required files.

To solve this problem:

  1. To the system path variable, add the path to the user profile folder:
  2. If the user profile folder is on an NTFS partition, grant full permissions to all users for this folder.

Windows Installer

The following are known Windows Installer issues:

Installing a Product without Advertised Shortcuts

Option 1

For each installation, run Setup using the following syntax:

setup /v"DISABLEADVTSHORTCUTS=1"

Option 2

For multiple installations or in the case of a multi-user rollout:

  1. Run Sconfig.exe.
If Sconfig is not installed, run the English version directly from the CD or from a network image. To launch Sconfig, browse to the folder:

Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
7.10\Accessories

  1. Select the product .msi from the CD or network image.
  2. In the Properties dialog, add the property DISABLEADVTSHORTCUTS. Set the value of this property to 1.
  3. Create the transform file in a location where you have write access.
  4. When you install the product, apply the transform you have just saved. This transform forces Windows Installer to create non-Advertised shortcuts.

Disabling Migration

To preserve an existing product version and install the new version 7.1 side-by-side, you may want to disable migration.

To disable migration of user profiles from version 6.2 to 7.1, run:

setup /v"ALLOWMIGRATE="

To disable migration of user profiles from version 7.0 to 7.1, run:

setup /v"DISABLE71UPGRADE=1"

Warning: Side-by-side installation is not advised. It may cause incompatabilities (especially with the NFS Maestro product line).

HostExplorer

Host Connection Delay with Antivirus Software

If you are running antivirus software in Windows 2000, you may experience an increase in the time that HostExplorer (or a deployed installation of HostExplorer) takes to establish an initial connection to the host. This connection time may be longer than the delay time value set on the host. In this case, a connection will not take place.

Command Line Options

At the time of release, HostExplorer does not support the -u and -w command line switches.

Launching External Applications

At the time of release, HostExplorer does not allow you to create a session profile that launches an external application (such as an e-mail program or a web browser).

Disabling Session Options

This version of HostExplorer offers a slightly different menu configuration. As a result, some of the strings you can add to the HostExplorer .ini file to disable session options or user interface items have changed.

For a complete list of the strings, see HostExplorer Help.

HostExplorer Deployment Wizard

Revised Default Directory Structure

For end users, the default directory structure for the deployed installation of HostExplorer has changed. The previous directory structure was as follows:

Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
7.00\HostExWeb\Fonts

The current version of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard creates the following two directories when installing HostExplorer:

Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
HEActiveX\Accessories

Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
HEActiveX\HostExplorer\Fonts

End-User System DLL Requirements

For deployed installations of HostExplorer to work properly on end-user machines, these machines must have the correct minimum version of a system DLL file (mfc42.dll) installed in their system folders. The following table lists the minimum level of this file.

File File Version Product Version
mfc42.dll 6.00.8447.0 6.0.300

You have three options for ensuring that this file is available for end users.

You can use one of two executables from the HostExplorer Deployment CD to distribute this DLL file to end users:

SysUpdate.exe can be executed from the CD on the end user's machine. The user may be asked to reboot.

SysUpdate-Silent.exe can be distributed through Microsoft SMS. It executes silently and automatically forces a reboot upon completion.

Both of these executables are located on the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard CD, in the following location:

<cddrive>:\3rdParty\SystemUpdates\

You can obtain a Microsoft executable file (MFC42.exe) from the following URL:

http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vc/mfc42.cab

You need to extract the executable from this .cab file before you can use it.

You can allow mfc42.dll to download automatically when an end user accesses a deployment project that requires it. This option works only if the end user's system folder is unlocked. The user may be forced to reboot after the download.

Running Previous Web-Deployed Versions of HostExplorer

If the end users run a web-deployed installation of HostExplorer 7.1, they cannot run a previous web-deployed version of HostExplorer on the same machine. End users can only run a web-deployed version of HostExplorer that is higher than the version already installed on their machine.

Project Cannot Be In Use at Time of Update

If you edit a deployment project and try to place the revised version on your web server while the original version is in use by an end user, the project file on the web server may be locked.

We recommend that you stop web service before you add any changed files to your web server.

One-Minute Delay for Editing Projects or Indexes

If you place a deployment project or an index on your server, and a user accesses it, you may need to wait at least one minute before you can update the project or index; if you try to update it sooner, you may get a message saying the file is in use. This one-minute delay is a security feature of many web servers.

Special Characters Cannot Be Used in Name Fields

In the following wizard fields, you cannot type these characters \ / : * ? " < > |

User Installation Type

For Windows NT and 2000, if you choose All Users as the user type on the Installation Settings screen for creating a deployment project, then only end users with administrative privileges can install HostExplorer. We recommend that you use Current User for Windows NT and 2000 environments.

Host Name and Port Number for ActiveX Controls

If you create a deployment project that has no toolbar and is an ActiveX control, then make sure to specify a host name and port number when using the wizard. Without this information, end users cannot make a connection.

Function Keys and Control Sequences

In deployed installations of HostExplorer, some function keys and control sequences may not work properly because the browser may interfere with them getting passed to HostExplorer.

Security Options

Make sure you secure your company's web server and downloading environment. The features of the HostExplorer Deployment Wizard have been designed solely for the purpose of facilitating the management of the end-user desktop; they are not designed as security features.

When end users click a download link on the wizard-generated web page, they are prompted to accept Hummingbird .cab files; for the download to work properly, tell your end users to trust the Hummingbird files.

Uninstalling from End-User Machines

When uninstalling a deployed version of HostExplorer, make sure that all browser windows are closed. Failure to do so can cause an incomplete removal, resulting in an end user's possible inability to run a new deployed version.

Jconfig

Installing Jconfig Daemon via a Shared Image

You may experience problems with Jconfig Daemon if the component is installed via a shared image. When starting certain services, Jconfig Daemon attempts to load DLL files found on the remote computer. To load these files, the daemon must have access to the shared product directories. This access is provided by changing the "log on as" settings for the service so that the service is run under the account for which the shared product was installed.

To edit the service settings (Windows NT):

  1. Open Windows Control Panel and click Services.
  2. Locate the Hummingbird Jconfig Daemon in the list of services. Click Startup to display the editable "log on as" account fields.

To edit the service settings (Windows 2000):

  1. Open Windows Control Panel and click Administrative Tools.
  2. In Administrative Tools, click the Services icon.
  3. Locate the Hummingbird Jconfig Daemon in the list of services and click the Properties toolbar button.
  4. Select the Log On tab and set the "This Account" and corresponding "Password" fields.

Hummingbird Basic Language

Migrating Script Files from Version 6.2 to
Versions 7.0 or 7.1

Most compiled Hummingbird Basic files (*.ebx) work in version 7.1 without requiring you to rebuild them in Hummingbird Basic Workbench. In some cases, the migrated script does not work if the script used to create the .ebx file used one or more of the Hummingbird directory macros (-e, -h, or -u). In this case, the script must be rebuilt to work with version 7.1.

Hummingbird Basic expands these macros in the following manner:

Macro Expands to path:
-h C:\Program Files\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
<version>\Accessories\
-u <ApplicationDataFolder>\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
<version>\Accessories\
-e <ApplicationDataFolder>\Hummingbird\Connectivity\
<version>\Accessories\EB\

In version 6.2, the expansion was essentially the same, except that all binary files for the product were accessible from the directory. For version 7.0 and higher, only the binary files for the installed features of Accessories are located in the directory.

Web Update

Update Hummingbird Option Visible to Non-Administrators

Non-administrators will see the Update Hummingbird option and the WebUpdate Settings icons in the System Administration folder. Depending on your platform, this option behaves differently.

Windows Platforms

When a non-administrator double-clicks either icon, the Hummingbird update web site opens in a browser. WebUpdate.exe does not run.

Windows Terminal Server Platforms

When a non-administrator double-clicks either icon, a message appears advising that to perform an update, you must contact a system administrator. Only an adminstrator can use the shortcuts.
