The newsgroups are electronic bulletin boards where you are both reader and writer. There are thousands of discussion topics. You will need newsreader software to have access to the newsgroups. The newsreaders are often included in your browsers or in your provider's package. If you don't have one, here is a place to download it. The newsgroups are one of Usenet's huge collection of topic groups.

You must first set your newsreader with the address of an Access Usenet Site. Your provider should give you this access to the newsgroup. Otherwise look here for the address of a free Public Access Usenet Site. Then suscribe to the news server desired in order to read the news. It's a free and easy process. Usenet groups can be `unmoderated'in which case anyone can post. If the newsgroups are `moderated', the messages are automatically sent to a moderator who filters them and posts the results. Some newsgroups have parallel mailing lists for Internet users with no Netnews access. Once a message has been sent to the newsgroups it is automatically sent to all the subsribers of the list and vice versa. Some moderated groups are distributed as `digests', with groups of postings periodically collected into a single large posting with an index.

The news servers are divided into subgroups.

 Here are the main subgroups.
