Preferences - Search Options

1) Options

Search Only This Page:
Most basic search. Only searches the current page. Does not follow any links.

A search on page http://www.xxx.com/index.html with this option:
1) Will look for any files on http://www.xxx.com/index.html
2) Will not follow links located on this page.

Search Only The Links:
Does not look for files in the current page. Only follows the links to external sites.

Example:
A search on page http://www.xxx.com/index.html with this option:
1) Will not look for any files on http://www.xxx.com/index.html
2) Will follow links located on this page.

Search This Page Then The Links:
Does not look for files in the current page. Only follows the links to external sites.

Example:
A search on page http://www.xxx.com/index.html with this option:
1) Will look for any files on http://www.xxx.com/index.html
2) Will follow links located on this page.

 2) For Any Page, Search The Complete Site
When checked on, this option tells File Mag-Net to follow any links that are on the same server as the current page, disregarding any limits.(See #5 below)

Example:
A search on page http://www.xxx.com/index.html with this option:
1) Will cause all of the web pages on  server www.xxx.com to be searched. File Mag-Net will go from one page to another and as long as it finds a link leading to a page on www.xxx.com that has not already been searched, it will follow it, disregarding any limits.(See #5 below)

3) Only Search Under Current Directory
When checked on, this option tells File Mag-Net to only search under the directory of the entered web page.

Example:
A search on page http://www.xxx.com/directory1/index.html with this option:
1) Will cause all of the web pages on  server www.xxx.com  in and under directory1 to be searched.

In the following, dir2 is under directory1.    http://www.xxx.com/directory1/dir2/index.html

This option is userful for isolating large web site areas. A search with this option on www.cnn.com on the page
http://www.cnn.com/weather/index.html will result in only the weather topics to be searched, not the headlines, sports, etc.

4) List Imbedded Images
When checked on, this option tells File Mag-Net to list all the images on a web page that are displayed to the user (as oppose to images that are in a web page as a text link with a description). In order for this option to work, the image extension (usually jpg or gif) must be listed in the Extensions Tab in Preferences.

5) Keyword Search Only
When checked on, this option tells File Mag-Net not to list any files during its search. Only list the web pages containing Keywords entered. If this option is checked on, and there are no Keywords entered, File Mag-Net will basically just search and not list anything.

6) # of Child Layers to Search
This option deals with how many layers to the user wants File Mag-Net to search, and can be best explained through an example.

Example:
A search on page A1 with # of Child Layers to Search set a 2 :

With the way the World Wide Web works:

A1 has links to B1 and B2;
        B1 has links to C1 and C2;                         Child Layer #1
        B2 has links to C3 and C4 ;
                C1 has links to D1 and D2 ;                Child Layer #2
                C2 has links to D3 and D4 ;
                C3 has links to D5 and D6 ;
                C4 has links to D7 and D8 ;

Setting this Option to 2 will tell File Mag-Net to stop at C1, C2, C3, C4 and not search the D's.
In most web pages, since there are many more links, setting this option to a high number will result in a very lengthy search.

7) Auto Focus on Location Bar
When this preference is checked, the focus automatically returns to the location bar when switching between File Mag-Net and another application.

Preferences - Extensions

This tab lets the user specify the types of files to look for and also the types not to look for. File Mag-Net will only list the files whose extensions (untitled.txt where txt is the extension) are listed on this tab with a check next to them.

File Mag-Net comes with a default set of common extensions which can be modified easily by the user.

You can turn off searches for specific file types by unchecking them.

Preferences - Sites to Avoid

This tab lets the user specify the certain sites that File Mag-Net should not follow links into. These usually are very large sites which do not contain data on any specific topic. Also these are commercial sites or search engines which most web sites provide links to. By avoiding sites like these, search times are improved immensley.

File Mag-Net comes with a default set of Sites To Avoid which can be modified easily by the user.
