Rather different from the other guides here is Johansens Recommended Inns with Restaurants. This is a
large, glossy book, priced around ú10 (also available on a CD-ROM including companion Hotel and Country
House guides at ú30). Johansens was recently unfavourably mentioned on BBC TV's Watchdog along with
another of other hotel guides that charge the featured businesses a hefty chunk of cash to appear. It was
suggested that only limited effort is put into ensuring that the entries are impartial, effectively making it a large
advertising supplement. Despite this, I have found Johansens to be reliable, and though it has no information on
beer, it does give a clear feel for the atmosphere of a pub in full page entries that include good colour
photographs. Directions are good, but details of food often tend to
the flowery rather than the specific.
