There's something satisfying about trudging up to a pub after a good long walk and settling down to rest those aching feet with a pint in your hand. The pub walks series (each book imaginatively titled 'Pub Walks in Wiltshire' etc.), published by Countryside Books and retailing about the รบ5 mark, combine a series of circular walks with a recommended place to hang up the rucksack. Walks are generally designed to be acceptable to all but the pedically challenged, typically ranging from three to six miles. Directions to the pub are clear and accompanied by OS map details, plus a sketch map of the walk. Pubs are assessed on appearance, food and beer, and are generally selected to be attractive. Standards a probably a trifle lower than in the dedicated guides, as the pubs have to be in the right place, but the pub walk books include some interesting inns that don't make it into the competition. On the walk points of interest are described, and anyone who fancies the combination of a spot of exercise with a good pint should check out the local guide.
