HUBBLE SPACE PICTURES
The Hubble space telescope is over 10 years old and is still producing
remarkable images of space. This month PC World is including some
of the more recent and spectacular images. Pictures are Courtesy of
NASA and AURA/STScI . Please be aware that images from the Hubble
library have varying degrees of copyright. Some are public domain,
while others will require permission from the authors. See
the licence text (licence.txt) in the d:/hubble folder for more
details.
Viewing the images
The images in this collection are in JPG format which can be viewed
in most Web browsers. They can be found in the d:/space/hubble folder
of this CD, where d is your CD-ROM drive.
Alternatively, many graphics programs allow you to sort files and
browse thumb nail images (smaller images that use less resources).
Examples include Paint Shop Pro and IrfanView (see the Essentials
section of CD 1). IrfanView is a free program which also has basic
editing and batch conversion features. However if you paste the JPG
images into other documents such as Microsoft Word, the files will
be converted to a less efficient Bitmap format which will require
greater resources to store. For example, the file 'A Cosmic Searchlight
- 0020y.jpg' is 400KB, but when converted to a bitmap, it is over
20MB. You may want to reduce their size if you are using the images
for your desktop or screensaver.
More information about the pictures
The Hubble site has more details about each picture. The filename
of each image has the keywords used by the Hubble site to describe
the picture. Simply type these words into the search box and you should
be able to find more information about it.
