The list of drives, directories and files on the left side of the screen are on your computer, and will be called from this point onwards, the "local" view. The list on the right side of the screen is a list of files on your server, and you can double-click any "directory" (which is represented a a yellow/brown folder) to open it, this will be called the "remote" view.

Logging

The grey scolling list at the bottom of the screen shows a log of activity between the local computer and the remote server. By right-clicking on this list you can save the log for future use, should you require it.

Getting / Puting Files

The "GET" and "PUT" buttons should be taken to mean "Get a file from the server" and "Put a file on the server" respectively. To get a file from the server, you must click an item in the remote view. To put a file on the server, you must click a filename in the local view and then use the buttons.

Retrieve Other File

If a file you need is not listed, it may be hidden from view. By choosing this option from the Extras menu you can specify the exact filename to get.

ASCII, Binary or Unknown

Many FTP servers are hosted on UNIX and Linux servers, and so when transfering documents you should select the appropriate transfer type. This can be seen as a drop-down list on the FTP toolbar.

Use binary mode to transfer all files unless you know the file contains only text, then use ASCII. If you know that the host you are transferring to or from is the same as your local host, you can always use Binary mode and never use ASCII.

Transfering Multiple Files

This option from the "Extras" menu allows you to upload all the local files in a directory to the server, or download all the files in a directory from the server. Don't use [Shift] + Click to upload/download multiple files in the FTP window: it won't work!.

Other commands you can perform:

Delete File or Directory (Commands Menu) Choose the appropriate option for the file or directory on the FTP server that you wish to delete.

New Folder This option will create a new folder on the web server.

Rename File or Directory (Commands Menu) This will rename the currently selected file or directory on the FTP server.
