State Castle Litomysl

The construction of the castle was finished in 1582. The castle considered to be an architectonic pearl is usually ranked among Renaissance castles of the so-called Moravian type. It attracts your attention primarily by its graffiti. The graffiti were reconstructed in the 70s by top Czech painters and sculptors such like Vaclav Bostφk and Olbram Zoubek. In the area of the castle there is a unique and special small theatre with audience for 150 people. In the 80s the castle was the venue of filming Milos Forman┤s film called äAmadeus". In 1994 a negotiation of seven Central-European presidents took place in the castle and a year later the castle was visited by the Spanish Royal couple.



Museum and Gallery in Litomysl

The museum is located in the historical building of a previously piaristic grammar school (built during 1714 û 19). The museum and the gallery manage extensive collections namely ethnographic, numismatic and decorative arts. Currently the museum building presents permanent expositions devoted to older history of the town and surroundings (including an exhibition of folk furniture and other national materials).



U Rytiru House

The house was built in the 40s of the 16th century. Its facade is decorated with a figure stone work of art. The interior preserves a Renaissance cassette ceiling and certain other architectonic elements. The well-known title was given to the house on the basis of a story by A. Jirasek.



Portmoneum û Josef Vachal┤s Museum

Josef Vachal is one of the most extraordinary Central European artists of the 20th century. The museum presents Vachal┤s wall paintings inspired by Vachal┤s interest in mystique, Oriental religion and philosophy. Vachal was a writer interested in free graphics, namely colour woodcutting, painting, and ceramics decoration and painting and cutting decoration of furniture. The work on saving the unique Portmoneum (its financial value is beyond calculation) was financed and organised by Paseka Publishing House.



Church of Povyseni sv. Krize (provost)

The current provost church is the only remnant of the augustinian monastery established by Litomysl bishop Jan of Streda in 1356 and was destroyed during Hussite wars. The temple is a gothic triple-nave building with adjacent provostry where of the original monastery a precious chapel of St. Margaret was preserved.



Church of Nalezeni sv. Krize (piaristic)

A piaristic temple û together with the castle the major dominant of the Litomysl panorama û the construction of which was commenced in 1719 according to a design by a fore Italian builder named Alliprandi. The monumental temple with sculptures by Matyas Braun belongs to unique European buildings of late Baroque. The piaristic temple belongs to areas that similarly as the State castle is intended by the town of Litomysl to be registered in the UNESCO list.



Smetana┤s House

Smetana┤s House is a living cultural centre of Litomysl. It was built during 1903 û 1905 in a noble Art Nouveau style as a theatre building and since the beginning it has been used as a host to many different events. During the years of 1994 û 1996 it was completely reconstructed.

Toulovec┤s Square

Toulovec┤s square is situated in the previous settlement round the castle at the place of the oldest Litomysl dwelling between the castle hill and the main LitomyÜl square. Toulovec'c square has a square ground-plan dominated by a Gothic church of Rozeslani sv. Apostol∙ (Sending St. Apostles) from the beginning of the 15th century. It was established at the previous hospital that originated thanks to generous gifts from a rich yeoman Vavrinec Toulovec of Tremosna. Also thanks to the reconstruction of the square and adjacent lanes the square belongs to the most beautiful places in Litomysl. The pub U Cerneho orla near the square was visited during his journey to Litomysl by the Spanish King Juan Carlos with his wife.



Smetana┤s Square

Specifically long and narrow Smetana┤s square is a nice whole created by many various styles. The dominant of the square is formed by an old Gothic council-house with a tower built in 1418. Other precious buildings include a Renaissance House called U Rytiru and Morovy Column in the upper part of the square. The sculpture of Litomysl native Bedrich Smetana, a famous composer, by an excellent Czech sculptor Josef Stursa, undoubtedly belongs to the major cultural monuments of the town.
