Many organizations use special settings to run Microsoft Internet Explorer on a corporate intranet. These settings can be as simple as specifying a proxy server to allow access to the World Wide Web. A proxy server acts as a security barrier between your internal network (intranet) and the Internet, keeping other people on the Internet from gaining access to confidential information on your internal network.
Or you can use automatic configuration settings specified in a file. This file is created by your system administrator to run Internet Explorer on your corporate system. The file might include settings for Internet Explorer options, such as which start page to use, or configuration settings for the proxy server.
