About UnixWare 7 systems

About UnixWare 7 systems

The UnixWare® 7 product line is a family of runtime software, development kits, and optional licenses, products, and services that enable you to tailor a system to meet your computing needs.

This guide discusses installing the base operating system and optional components from the numbered UnixWare 7 CD-ROMs (for example: disks 1, 2, and 3 of 3). For the latest information on the contents of your media kit, refer to the Installation Roadmap provided with your software.

UnixWare 7 licenses

When you install UnixWare 7 runtime software, you enter a license corresponding to a UnixWare 7 ``Edition'', a collection of software targeted to a specific purpose.

The installation conveniently selects the appropriate software sets, services, and packages to install based on your license, allowing you to bypass the software selection phase of the installation. If you want to customize software selection, you can use the licensed defaults as a base from which to install additional services and packages or remove those you do not need.

This list of Editions matches currently shipping software. When you receive UnixWare 7, more Editions may be available and the contents of some Editions may have changed. For example, later releases of some products may be included, and obsolete products may be removed.

The UnixWare 7 Editions are:

Base Edition
The Base Edition supports one user and one CPU, and includes networking functionality and SCO ARCserve/Open Lite.

Business Edition
The Business Edition supports up to 5 users and 1 CPU, and includes networking functionality, SCO VisionFS(TM), and SCO ARCserve/Open Lite.

Departmental Edition
The Departmental Edition supports up to 25 users and 2 CPUs, and includes SCO VisionFS file and print services and full SCO ARCserve/Open backup and restore functionality.

Development Edition
The Development Edition includes software from the Development Kits CD-ROM. For more information on this Edition, see the Release Notes for the UnixWare and OpenServer Development Kit.

Enterprise Edition
The Enterprise Edition supports up to 50 users and 4 CPUs, plus full Online Data Manager (ODM) functionality, SCO VisionFS (full version), and SCO ARCserve/Open (full version).

Intranet Edition
The Intranet Edition supports one user and up to 2 CPUs, and includes SCO ARCserve/Open (full version), SCO VisionFS, Netscape Enterprise Server(TM), and Netscape Directory Server(TM).

Messaging Edition
The Messaging Edition supports one user and up to 2 CPUs, and includes SCO ARCserve/Open (full version), Netscape Mail Server(TM), and Netscape Directory Server.

Evaluation licenses

The license you enter during the installation transparently selects the correct services and packages to install on your system. If you choose to defer licensing during the installation, or if you install products not included with your license, you will be issued a free 60-day trial license. If you want to continue to use the software after that time, contact your vendor to purchase a license, then use the SCOadmin License Manager to remove the evaluation license(s) and re-license the software.

If you defer licensing during installation, the system will be installed using Departmental Edition service and package selection defaults.

NOTE: The Strong Encryption Supplement is not available with an evaluation license. You must purchase a license to install this supplement.

UnixWare 7 system profiles

During the installation procedure, you can choose to install:

License-Based Defaults
This choice installs services and packages based on the license you purchased and entered. Selecting this option ensures that only appropriate, fully-licensed software is installed on your system.

Small Footprint Server
This choice installs a subset of services optimized to work well on systems with limited memory and disk capacity. It contains the base operating system and networking utilities; it does not contain graphics support or SCO ARCserve/Open.

Full (All Packages)
This choice enables all services and packages available on the media, with the exception of supplemental languages and multi-processor support. To add these packages, you must select the Customize Installation of Packages profile.

Customize Installation of Packages
You decide which services and packages to load (or not load) onto the system. The defaults enabled are based on the license you enter during the installation.

NOTE: If you choose Customize Installation of Packages or Full (All Packages), read ``Evaluation licenses'' to determine how to license the additional software you might install.

For a complete description of all available services and packages, see the Runtime Release Notes.

Media

The contents of the UnixWare media kit are described in the Installation Roadmap provided with your software.

If you are performing a networked installation, you must create two 3.5 inch Network Installation Utilities diskettes from the images found in the /info/images directory on the UnixWare Installation CD-ROM. See (/info/images/readme.htm) for more information.

In addition to the UnixWare media, your vendor may have provided you with one or more additional Host Bus Adapter (HBA) diskettes to support new hardware.

Printed documentation

The following printed documentation is included in the UnixWare 7 media kit:

See ``Related documentation'' for detailed information about the UnixWare 7 documentation set.

Free* UnixWare 7

Free* UnixWare 7, a functional, single-user version of UnixWare 7, is available for non-commercial and educational use.
