The Internet, or World Wide Web, is an international network of computers that contains a nearly infinite amount of information. You can work, learn, shop, communicate with others, or just have fun using the Internet, all from the comfort of your home.
Once your computer is set up to use the Internet, youÆll be able to:
- Get up-to-date information fast You don't have drive to a library, thumb through the Yellow Pages, buy stamps, or wait for normal business hours to find what you need.
- View Web pages all over the world With a Web browser (A program that lets you interact with other computers via Web pages on the Internet.), you can view documents, or "Web pages," on computers all over the world by typing the Web address (sometimes called a "URL") that identifies the location of the computer. For example, http://www.microsoft.com is the address for the Microsoft Web site.
- Conduct common financial transactions With an Internet connection and Money, you can download online statements (Electronic lists of the transactions that have cleared your financial institution. The information is similar to the information in your paper statement, and you can use it to update your account records electronically. Online statements are available through both Web and direct banking in Money.) from your bank or brokerage firm to your computer, pay bills online, download (When you make an online connection to a bank, financial institution or Web site requesting information (such as a stock quote or bank statement), that information is transmitted over the Internet, or ôdownloadedö, to your computer.
