1  In the Account Register, fill out the Deposit transaction form as you would for any transaction.
2  In the Amount field, enter the amount you deposited minus the amount of cash you got back.
3  Click Split.

The Amount field in the first part of the Split Transaction dialog box shows the amount of the actual deposit.

4  Change the amount to equal the total amount of the check including the cash you got back.
5  Press ENTER. This will take you to the second line of the split.

The Amount field of the second line of the split transaction will contain a negative amount equal to the cash amount you withdrew from the check.

6  In the Category field of the second line, enter the name of the category you use for cash. If youÆre tracking your cash, you might want to enter this as a transfer to your cash account. To learn more about this, see Tracking cash.
7  Press ENTER. The unassigned amount at the bottom of the Split Transaction box should be zero.
8  Click Done.

Note that the amount you enter in the Deposit field before you split a transaction is unaffected by changes you make in the Split Transaction dialog box, as long as the amounts of the split total the original amount.
