IIS Host Helper Service

Server-only: This tool is included in the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit only.

The Host Helper Service is a service that registers host header strings as NetBIOS names. This allows users on an intranet that are using WINS to access the Web server by the host header name without registering the Web server's name with a DNS server.

Note

The IIS Host Helper Service will only register host names that are 15 characters or less and do not contain a PERIOD (.). This is to avoid confusion with DNS names that contain a PERIOD (.). The 15-character limitation is due to the nature of NetBIOS names. NetBIOS names cannot exceed 16 characters, and the IIS Host Helper Service needs to use the 16th character.
