EBCDIC

The Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (pronounced ôeb-suh-dickö) is a binary code from IBM. It is used for computer generated text, as well as communications and printer control. This code originated with the IBM System/360 and is still used in IBM mainframes and most IBM midrange computers. It is an 8-bit code (yielding 256 combinations) that stores one alphanumeric character or two decimal digits in a byte.

ASCII, EBCDIC, and Unicode are the codes most used to represent character data.
