The mission of the Hellenic Fire Service as it derives
from its foundation law
and the internal service regulation is to save/ guard and protect the
life and
property of the citizen and the state from the risks of fires and calamities.
Specifically the functions of the Fire Service are:
a) To extinguih fires during peace and war times, to take and impose
preventive measures in order to avoid the risks from their expansion
and to
help those at risk.
b) To deal with technological accidents and industrial disasters, and
to rescue
people and goods which are in peril.
c) To take and impose preventive measures in order to deal with the
risks
and losses due to calamities, floods, break - downs and other disasters
and to
assist in the rescue of the property at risk.
d) To safe - guard and maintain in safety the property which has been
set on
fire or threatened from fire or any other hazard until it is delivered
to the
police or its owners.
e) To offer first aid to those injured due to the above misfortune
and to
transport them immediately to the hospital.
f) To assist people who have been trapped in an elevator or in a car
after
an accident.
g) To perform any other function which derives from other regulations
and relates to the firemanÆs profession as well as that concearning
the
shearing of responsibility of the fire service to the Emergency Planning
Procedures.
h) To assist the police forces and the army, if demanded, in order
to deal
with emergency incidents. This service is provided by decision of the
Fire
Brigade Chief and after a proper recommendation of the chiefs of each
fire station.
i) To assist the Forest Fire Service in case of a forest fire, according
to the
existing legislation, if the chief of the fire station estimates that
the mobilasation
of the fire engines is possible.
j) To recomend, impose and follow - up preventive and supressive measures
and
fire protection facilities by the existing legislation.
k) To sue for offenses foreseen by the article 433 of the penal code
and to make
inquiries about the crime of arson according to the articles 264, 266
and 267 of
the penal code.
l) To train and advice the employees from industry and other enterprises,
medical centres, schools e.t.c. as well as the public at large about
the immediate
fire extinguishing procedures and the ways of preventing them, if demanded.
m) To elaborate, edit and apply plans for preventing and tackling big
fires or
other disasters in cooperation with other public or municipal authorities,
if needed.
The fire service deals with an average of 55000 incidents a year aproximately
of
which 25000 are fires and the other 30000 include people caught in
elevators,
rescue activities and other incidents. This accounts for 148 incidents
a day most
of them occuring in the greater Athens area. In addition to that, the
fire service is
dealing every day with port and airport fire protection and other industrial
sites,
as well as with the enforcement and control of the fire fighting measures
in the
industrial and other areas and with the provision of personnel and
machinery for
the training of different groups for fire protection.
