Starting, Stopping, and Pausing Microsoft NNTP Service
Microsoft NNTP Service runs as a service on Microsoft® Windows NT® Server. You can start, stop, and pause the news site using Internet Service Manager or Internet Service Manager (HTML).
You can also start and stop the service itself using the Services application in Control Panel. However, when the service is stopped, you cannot use Internet Service Manager or Internet Service Manager (HTML) to start the news site or perform other administrative functions. Stopping the news site does not stop the service itself.
When you start Microsoft NNTP Service, it accepts new connections from users. When you stop Microsoft NNTP Service, it disconnects current users and does not accept new connections. When you pause Microsoft NNTP Service, it does not accept new connections but continues to service existing connections. If you want to stop Microsoft NNTP Service but not disconnect users currently connected to the news site, you can also choose to shut down "gracefully."
To start, stop, or pause Microsoft NNTP Service using Internet Service Manager:
-
Start Internet Service Manager.
-
Select the Microsoft NNTP Service entry.
-
From the Action menu, choose Start, Stop, or Pause.
To start, stop, or pause Microsoft NNTP Service using Internet Service Manager (HTML):
-
Start Internet Service Manager (HTML).
-
Select the Microsoft NNTP Service entry.
-
Choose Start, Stop, or Pause.
To start, stop, or pause Microsoft NNTP Service using Control Panel:
-
From the Start menu, choose Settings and then Control Panel.
-
Run the Services application.
-
In the Service box, select Microsoft NNTP Service, and then choose Start, Stop, or Pause.
To shut down Microsoft NNTP Service gracefully:
-
Pause Microsoft NNTP Service to prevent new connections.
-
To check for current users, use either Internet Service Manager or Internet Service Manager (HTML). Choose Current Sessions. All current users are listed.
-
If you want to block current users from posting new articles, use either Internet Service Manager or Internet Service Manager (HTML). Choose the NNTP Settings property sheet, and clear the Allow client posting check box.
-
Stop Microsoft NNTP Service after all current users have disconnected. Because the Current Sessions display in Internet Service Manager (HTML) does not refresh automatically as users disconnect, be sure to refresh the display periodically.
