Image Pan

This effect simulates a camera panning across a clip. You can also use this effect to zoom in on an area of a clip and to crop a clip. The Source window shows the area where the pan will begin or the area which will be zoomed in on. The Preview window shows the results of the adjustments made in the Source window. Creating a pan necessitates the use of keyframes. For more information on using keyframes, see Working with keyframes, and Working with effects.

To pan a clip:

1 In the Timeline, set a keyframe at the point you want the effect to begin.

2 Apply the effect, use any of the following techniques to specify the area of the clip where you want panning to begin, and click OK:

  • Drag the four corner points in the Source window to resize the viewing box. Shift-drag to preserve the current aspect ratio, Option-drag to preserve the project's aspect ratio, or Option+Shift-drag to preserve the clip's aspect ratio.
  • Specify coordinates for the four corner points in the boxes below the Source window.
  • Move the entire resized viewing box by dragging inside it.

  • 3 In the Timeline, set a keyframe at the point you want the pan to end.

4 Click Setup in the Effect Controls dialog box.

5 Repeat Step 1 to set the end of the pan.

. To produce a zoom effect, make the viewing box smaller or larger.

To crop the clip without panning:

Resize and move the viewing box. Click OK.
