Editing media information

Media information, which is also known as metadata or tags, is any kind of information about digital media content, such as the rating, play count, band, group, album, genre, producer, and so forth.

For CDs and DVDs, the Player attempts to obtain the media information automatically from a database on the Internet. For other kinds of music files that are listed in your Media Library, the Player can attempt to obtain media information from a database on the Internet if the media information is partially filled in and if the check box specifying this feature is selected.

If media information is not found for an item, or if the correct information is not found, you can manually enter the information for it. You can edit most of the media information for any digital media content that is listed in Windows Media Player.

You can edit media information for an item in several places in the Player:

In the playlist pane of the Now Playing feature
In the Copy from CD feature
In the Media Library feature
In the Copy to CD or Device feature

The information that appears in the Album Info and DVD Info views is not editable.

You can also get updated media information for albums if you have added the album to Media Library.

If you are sharing a computer, the media information that you edit in your Media Library does not appear in the Media Library of other users because each Media Library is stored in different locations, depending on the operating system installed on the computer.
To automatically obtain media information, your computer must be connected to the Internet and you must configure the Player to obtain the media information automatically. The Player automatically obtains media information by default.
