Changing the quality level of files copied to portable devices

When you copy files to your portable device, Windows Media Player uses compression technology that makes the files smaller so that they do not use as much space on your portable device.

By using the Copy to CD or Device feature, you can select the amount of compression used when copying files from your computer to your portable device. Typically, the more compression you use, the smaller the file is and the poorer the listening experience. The tradeoff is that when files are smaller, you can store more content on your portable device.

The Player does not compress files if it determines that the sound quality will not be optimal. Also, files cannot be copied by using a compression rate larger than the original file. For example, you cannot use the Player to automatically convert a 32 Kbps file on your computer to a 64 Kbps file, and then copy it to a portable device.
