Using the Toolbars

Opera's toolbars includes various sets of clickable buttons, input fields and dropdowns in the user interface.

Tip: Right-click any toolbar for a multiple choice menu.

Main bar

The Main bar helps you to do essential browsing:

Button What it does
  • Back
  • Forward
 Go back and forth in page history
Rewind Jump back in history
  1. Go to entry page on this site
  2. Go to exit page on previous site (if on entry page)
Fast forward Analyze page and go to the most likely next page
  1. Follow link rel="next" in page header
  2. Follow link in page with text "Next page" or similar
  3. Start slideshow if page contains links to multiple images
Reload Get the newest version of a page
Home Go to your home page
Hotlist Show the Hotlist
Wand Automatically log in to sites using the Wand
New Open new pages for browsing
Mail Show your unread mail
  • Open
  • Save
 Open and save files on your computer
Print Print Web pages
Find Find text in a page
  • Tile
  • Cascade
 Arrange your open pages
Full screen View Web page on entire screen

Tip: Use drag and drop to rearrange buttons.

Status bar

The Status bar shows useful information when you point your mouse to different items, both in Web pages and in the user interface.

Tip: Drag the status field to another toolbar to save space.

Personal bar

Put your favorite bookmarks, bookmark folders, and Web searches on the Personal bar so you can use them quickly and at any time.

This is how you place items on the Personal bar:

Bookmark link and show on Personal bar Drag link from Web page to Personal bar
Show bookmark folder on Personal bar Drag bookmark folder from Hotlist to Personal bar
Add search field to Personal bar Enable searches from the View menu.

These are some of the things you can do with the Personal bar:

Open link on Personal bar Click the link
Open link in new page Hold Shift and click link
Open link in background Hold Ctrl and Shift, then click link
Open all bookmarks in a folder Click folder and select "Open all folder items", or hold Ctrl while dragging folder to Opera's workspace
Search on the Web Enter text in search field and press Enter

Page bar

The Page bar lets you access your open Web pages as tabs. With a few pages open, try this:

Operation How to do it
Toggle between pages Click corresponding tabs
Browse in new page Double-click empty area right of rightmost tab
Close page
  • Method 1: Hold Shift and click tab
  • Method 2: Middle-click tab
Open page in new application window Drag tab to computer desktop
Bookmark page Drag tab to Hotlist

Address bar

The Address bar consists of the following items (left to right):

Item Explanation
Padlock icon Security level in current Web page
Image button Toggle images in the page
Preview button Preview printed version of page
Style button Customize page style
Page icon Drag to e.g. Hotlist to create bookmark
Address field Enter Web addresses
Address drop-down button Access recently typed addresses
The Go button Go to the address typed in
Search field Search the Web directly
Search drop-down button Select search engine
Search button Execute search
Zoom field Zoom in to enlarge text and images, or zoom out to get an overview
Zoom drop-down button Choose a preselected zoom

Caution: Always check the level of security on a Web site by hovering the padlock icon before transferring money or sensitive information. Do not proceed if there is no security.

Tip: If you have a Web address on the clipboard, press Ctrl + D to go to the address.

Some sites provide a navigation bar to make site navigation easier. Site navigation is also possible through the Navigation menu.

Progress bar

When a page loads, the Progress bar displays the following information (left to right):

  1. How much of the document is transferred
  2. Number of images transferred
  3. Total data transferred
  4. Average transfer speed
  5. Time elapsed since loading started
  6. Textual status of page loading
