After installing Bandwidth Controller you must add at least one filter for any traffic control to occur. Here are some simple steps to setting up a basic filter.
Before adding your first filter, you need to work out what it is you actually wish to filter.
For the Network Adapter, you must work out which one to use. If you have only one network adapter in your machine then this does not matter but it is more likely that you have two network adapters and one of them is for internet traffic. Work out which one is for internet (sometimes referred to as the 'external' network interface) by following the cables from your network adapters.
The Direction of the filter can be for send or receive. In most cases you will wish to control the receive bandwidth only (traffic that is being downloaded from the internet).
The Rate is the critical property of a filter. It determines the maximum bandwidth allocation. If you have DSL or cable internet and wish to limit people sharing from your internal network, choose a value like 5000 (5 K/s) or 10000 (10 K/s). To get a feel for how fast this is, a 56k modem can download at about 5 K/s.
Once you have those three requirements worked out, you can move on to the next step.
Click the 'File', 'New filter...' menu. A window will appear similar to the following one:
Click the Network Adapter box and select the adapter you chose in the previous step.
Click the Direction box and select the appropriate direction.
Click the Rate box and type in the rate you chose in the previous step.
Click the Ok button and the filter will take effect immediately.
Now you should test the filter to ensure it is working as desired. Go to one of the machines on your local network and try to browse. Try downloading a file, it should only go at the rate you entered in or less.
You can change an existing filter by right clicking it in the list and choosing 'Edit...' from the menu. If you only wish to slow down a certain machine on your network, enter its IP address in the Source IP Address field.
While fine tuning the filter is can be useful to use the Statistics Window. This shows the amount of data being used and other useful information. You can view filter statistics by double clicking a filter in the list.
