Ave de presa de plumaje blanco y negro con la cola ahorquillada. Tamaño: 50-64 cm.; peso: 465 g. Esta especie planea sobre ciénagas y pantanos, cazando grandes insectos, lagartos, ranas y pequeñas aves. Anida en el sur de Estados Unidos, de la costa de Carolina del Sur hasta Luisiana, y también desde el sur de México hasta Paraguay. Las poblaciones norteñas invernan en el norte de América del Sur.
