Golondrina grande de plumaje completamente negro púrpura en los machos. Las hembras tienen el vientre blanco. Tamaño: 21 cm.; peso: 55 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en gran parte del este y la costa del Pacífico de América del Norte, invernando en América del Sur. Una especie rara en los pasos migracionales por Puerto Rico (por ejemplo, avistamientos en Boquerón, el 11 de mayo de 1974 y 17 de marzo de 2000), pero muchas veces confundida con la Golondrina de Iglesias, especie nidificante en la Isla.
