Zancuda de plumaje marrón oscuro iridiscente y pico largo y curvo. El adulto en plumaje reproductivo tiene una línea blanca bordeando la parte superior y los lados del pico (foto inferior). Las aves en plumaje no reproductivo presentan estrías en la cabeza. Tamaño: 49-66 cm.; peso: 485-580 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en las planicies costeras del sureste de Estados Unidos, Cuba, Jamaica y La Española, además del viejo mundo. Rara en los humedales de Puerto Rico, como por ejemplo los de la Reserva Natural Caño Tiburones (avistamientos el 11 de septiembre de 1998; 18 ejemplares vistos el 12 de marzo de 2001; 14 vistos el 6 de junio de 2001) y el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Laguna Cartagena.
