A native of the Arabian Peninsula and sub-Sahara Africa. It has a dark brown rump, in contrast to the white rump of the Indian Silverbill. Audio (M. Oberle).
This species was formerly lumped with the Indian Silverbill, and called the Warbling Silverbill (Lonchura malabarica). The Indian Silverbill retained the original Latin name when the species complex was split. The African Silverbill is kept as a cagebird in Puerto Rico, and might be expected to occur as an occasional escapee.

Especie nativa de la península Arábiga y África al sur del Sahara. La rabadilla de esta especie es marrón oscuro y no color blanco, como en el Pinzón Pico Plateado. Audio (M. Oberle).
Esta especie antiguamente era agrupada con el Pinzón Pico Plateado y la forma se conocía en inglés como Warbling Silverbill, o Lonchura malabarica.. Cuando estas formas fueron divididas, el Pinzón Pico Plateado mantuvo el nombre científico original. Lonchura cantans es una especie que se mantiene en cautiverio en Puerto Rico y ocasionalmente algunos individuos escapados pudieran ocurrir en estado silvestre.
