A large white parrot with a crest that the bird raises and lowers depending on its mood. The underwings are very light yellow. Length: 46 cm.; weight: 550 g. Native to the northern Moluccas Islands of eastern Indonesia where it is threatened by logging and excessive trapping for the pet trade. Worldwide this species is considered vulnerable to extinction with a total population of less than 183,000. A rare, introduced bird on Puerto Rico, but may well be an established breeder in the wild (recent sightings in Río Piedras, Caguas, and Guaynabo, with a nest in a Royal Palm stump in Guayanbo).

TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; CACATUIDAE; Cacatuinae.
