Similar in size to the Broad-winged Hawk, but the adult has a gray head and upper breast, reddish brown thighs and belly, and a black and white barred tail. The immature (at left in photo above) has streaked undersides. Length: 35-40 cm. Endemic to Hispaniola. This species is considered critically endangered with a total population of less than 250. Accidental on Culebra, April 1984. In its native Dominican Republic, a common, Spanish name for this bird is "GuaraguaĆto", which is also one of the common names for the Broad-winged Hawk in Puerto Rico. This is an example of how vernacular names can cause confusion from location to location, even on two neighboring islands within a hundred miles of each other.

TAXONOMY: FALCONIFORMES; ACCIPITRIDAE; Accipitrinae
