> Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaHi fellow Canadian. Regarding your problem with that crewperson whom everyone hates, there are no simple solutions. No matter how much you hate him, it probably won't make him go away. Here are a few possible ways to deal with this person.
1). First of all, you want to protect new crew from this person's diatribe. So, warn them about him. Many may feel unconfortable about beginning a new job and their self-confidence may be weakened if they listen to the mean things this guy says. By knowing that everybody who works with you thinks that this person is offensive, it'll be easier for the new candidate to brush off his insults.
2) Here is an anecdote: Say you go fishing 4 days in a row at the very same spot. You never catch any fish. I bet that the chances of you returning to fish at that same spot again are pretty slim. This anecdote illustrates clearly what goes on in abusive people's heads. They insult and hurt to get a reaction, among other things. If you just ignore their comments, they will get bored with you and move on to someone else. It does however take a lot of self-control to pull this off.
3) If you are sure that everybody in your workplace feels as you do about this person, then why not try to get him to see that no one likes the way he acts. You could elect one person from your group to have a talk with him. Preferably one who is well-liked and respected, and who is also going to be able to stand up to this guy and look him straight in the eyes. Then, simply tell the guy something like this 'Listen guy, life is full of choices to make. We're giving you a choice right now. Either you learn to treat your colleagues, new and old, with respect, or you go home every night knowing you're a rotten little prick and that no one likes, respects, or works with you out of choice'. Don't utter threats, stick to the consequences of his actions. Be sure that this conversation goes on in private. Knowing that some people are hearing this may make the hated guy refuse to cooperate, just out of pride. Make sure that this guy knows that the person in front of him was sent by all the workers.
Remember, there are no easy solutions. Just remember that no matter what happens, you'll have learned a littl more about human interaction.
