Waga + Sendai=Waga-Sen Team
During my summer vacation I went to Waga village in Kitakami City located in Iwate Prefecture and participated in the Onward Expedition Club! event. You get off at the Kitakami exit on the expressway and Waga village is right there.

Right away we formed teams with members from the village and the Waga Village Olympics began. The name of my team was the Waga-Sen. Each team made their own flags and competed in various events. Our team did great and placed second among seven teams! After dinner and making a camp fire we went to see fireflies. All everyone could say was Oh they are so pretty! and we all just stared without saying a word.

On the morning of the second day we went bird watching and saw about 16 different species including butcherbirds and kites. Next, what we were all waiting for, playing in the river! Waga river was cold and very refreshing. We tried catching fish with our bare hands but I did not have any luck. It was really disappointing! For lunch we cooked the fish everyone else caught. In the afternoon I went to my home stay destination to visit Mr. Sato's farm and helped to dig up red potatoes in a very large field. At night, while we were playing with fireworks, one of the rocket launchers fell towards the house and went off. We were lucky that it didn't cause a fire!

On the third day I helped to pick leaves off green peppers and also went to the place where vegetables are shipped. Finally the day came to say good bye. I was really grateful for all the things I was able to experience in Kitakami. To everyone from Waga village, who saw me off until the bus disappeared from view, thank you so much!

There are lots of recently harvested vegetables at the warehouse
Norie says, I am coming back next year. See you all again! She really seems to have enjoyed herself. Send us your summer vacation experiences bye-mail!

Mini-Info
The event that Norie participated in was sponsored by the Sendai YMCA. The YMCA offers farm home stays, soccer camps, and beach activities during the summer. The ski camp during the winter and spring break is also very popular.
