[The Tale of Sumiyoshi]

There was a princess who lost her own mother. Her stepmother always ill-treated her and tried to interfere whenever she was ready to accept a marriage proposal and become happy.
The princess could not stand this mother any more and sought refuge at a convent in Sumiyoshi. Then this young officer searched for her everywhere, and finally met the princess again after he visited the Sumiyoshi Shrine and heard a message in his dream.
The two got married in town and lived happily ever after, whereas the stepmother fell low and died.

This tale was written in the Heian period by an unknown author, and became widely popular among people of all classes during the medieval ages. "The tale of Ochikubo" and Chapter of Tamakazura of "the Tale of Genji" were based on this story as well.
