Guard Dog v2.0.5 Whatsnew.txt
Copyright (c) 1999 Network Associates, Inc.,
Thank you for purchasing Guard Dog--our newest
Internet privacy and security solution designed for Windows
95 and Windows 98 users.
This document provides information that supplements the
Guard Dog documentation. The information in this document
and in the Help system is more up-to-date than that in the
manual. For more information on Guard Dog, such as FAQs and
product announcements, see our Web site at
http://www.mcafee.com.
WHAT'S NEW IN MCAFEE GUARD DOG 2.0.5
McAfee Guard Dog now includes the McAfee VirusScan engine for
virus scanning duties. This means that Guard Dog provides similar
antivirus protection to VirusScan. However, if you also have
McAfee VirusScan, it is recommended that you rely on VirusScan
for your antivirus protection. This also means that the DAT
files (virus definition files) can also be updated using the
DAT file upgrades for the McAfee ViruScan 4.x engine.
Guard Dog has been updated to correct locking problems during
Windows boot. Users of previous versions occasionally
experienced Windows locking up during boot. This problem
has been corrected in this version.
The Emergency Disk now takes only one diskette. Earlier versions
of Guard Dog required more than one diskette to make an Emergency
diskette, and on occasion, the disks would not be cretaed properly.
Or, an error would be encountered during the creation of the second
diskette. This problem has been corrected in this version of
Guard Dog.
1.0 Troubleshooting
===================
Network Associates works constantly to improve Guard Dog. Many
problems can be fixed by updating your software. Click the
Update button in the Guard Dog home screen to update Guard
Dog itself and get the latest virus protection using your
existing Internet connection.
1.1 If InstallShield reports error #42 or error #301 when you
run the Guard Dog setup program, your temporary directory
may not be configured properly. To solve this problem,
delete all files in your Windows/Temp directory.
1.2 If you experience any problems when installing other
programs, temporarily remove Guard Dog from memory before
starting installation. There are know issues when installing
Norton CrashGuard Deluxe and Norton Utilities 3.x. 1) If
running, close the main Guard Dog program. 2) Right-click
the Guard Dog (paw) icon in the Windows taskbar, click Exit.
Guard Dog will ask if you are sure. 3) Click Yes. 4)After
installing the other program, you can either restart your PC
or start Guard Dog from the Start menu to resume Guard Dog
protection.
1.3 If you have the Starfish Utility NetMeter installed on your
system, we recommend that you disable it while Guard Dog is
running. You will not be able to use the Update feature of
Guard Dog if NetMeter is enabled.
1.4 If you are experiencing intermittent problems with Guard
Dog Sound Effects and you are running MagnaRAM memory
management software, try disabling MagnaRAM while Guard Dog
is running.
1.5 Other Internet security products--like Finjan SurfinShield,
EliaShim eSafe Protect, or Norton Safe on the Web--should not
be run simultaneously with Guard Dog, as these
products contain similar security features that may
conflict.
1.6 If you permanently remove deleted files using Scheduler or
CheckUp, you will see a low disk space warning on PCs
running Windows 98 or Windows 95 with Microsoft Plus! To
remove deleted files, Guard Dog overwrites all available
disk space, which triggers the low-disk-space event. You can
safely ignore this warning.
1.7 Alert messages have been disabled for personal or financial
information sent over a secured server connection, because
the information is protected by encryption when it is sent
over the Internet. It is not a privacy or security threat.
1.8 For security reasons, you cannot use the Password Manager
feature in Browser Buddy to drag-and-drop a username and
password into the America Online login screen. Once logged
into AOL, you can use the drag-and-drop feature.
1.9 Some Web sites may use Java programs to set cookies. Guard
Dog is currently unable to track cookies set in this manner.
However, this is a rare occurrence.
1.10 Microsoft Media Player and multimedia codecs must be installed
in order to play the Guard Dog videos. These items are
installed by default when you perform a typical installation
for Windows, but may not be installed on some 'minimum'
installations of Windows. If you are unable to play the videos,
use the following procedure. 1) In Control Panel, double-click
Add/Remove Programs. 2) On the Windows Setup tab, click Multimedia,
and then click Details. 3) Select Media Player and Video
Compression and then click OK. You may need to specify the
location of your Windows installation CD.
1.11 If you have McAfee VirusScan installed on your computer, it is not
necessary to have two anti virus products. It is strongly recommended
that you disable the av portion in Guard Dog and use McAfee VirusScan
for your anti-virus protection.
1.12 Some software that uses Microsoft's DirectPlay may hang if Guard Dog
is running. This may include many games from the Microsft Home
software line. Disable Guard Dog while running these programs if you
experience any problems.
2.0 Corrections and additions to the Getting Started manual
===========================================================
2.1
Chapter: "Welcome to Guard Dog"
Section: "How Guard Dog works"
Page: 1
Add the following section, "Guard Dog and your
Internet connection" after the section "How Guard
Dog works."
Guard Dog and your Internet connection
--------------------------------------
Guard Dog relies on your Internet connection to provide its
Internet security features. Unless you have an Internet
provider and browser software designed for Windows 95 or
Windows 98, Guard Dog can provide only virus protection.
To use all Guard Dog features, you must have an Internet
connection through a local network or a modem. Some networks
have an Internet connection that you can use by connecting
to the network-either directly or through dial-up
networking. If you don't connect through a network, your
computer must have a modem installed.
You can establish an Internet connection through an Internet
Service Provider (ISP) such as Netcom or Earthlink. An ISP
acts as a middleman between you and the Internet. Your
computer connects (using your modem) to the ISP's equipment,
which in turn connects to the Internet. You may also be
connected to the Internet through an online service such as
America Online or CompuServe.
In addition, you must also have a browser. A browser is
software, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet
Explorer (it must be a version designed for Windows 95 or
Windows 98), that allows you to view text and graphics and
download files from Web sites. America Online 3.0 for
Windows 95 and CompuServe Interactive 3.0 both include
browsers that are compatible with Guard Dog.
2.2
Chapter: 2, "Installing Guard Dog"
Section: "System requirements"
Page: 7
Add to "256-color video display or better" the
following "Guard Dog looks and operates best in a
resolution of 800x600 pixels (or greater) and a
color palette of 32,000 color mode (15 bit) or
higher. 256-color palette is supported, but may
cause some color changes (caused by `palette
swapping') when switching between applications.
2.3
Chapter: 3, "Quick Tour of Guard Dog"
Section: "What information does Guard Dog ask me to enter?"
Page: 15
Add the following text before the Note. "For optimal
protection by Identity Protector, include all dashes
when typing numbers that typically contain dashes
(such as Social Security number, bank account
numbers, brokerage accounts, and ATM cards). For
example, if you enter 123-45-6789 as your social
security number, Guard Dog will recognize the number
with or without the dashes. If you enter 123456789,
Guard Dog won't alert you if the number is sent out
with dashes (123-45-6789). Credit cards do not need
dashes because you type the numbers into separate boxes."
2.4
Chapter: 3, "Quick Tour of Guard Dog"
Section: "Why should I create an Emergency Disk?"
Page: 15
Replace the second sentence in the second paragraph
with "You will need three formatted, high-density,
3.5-inch floppy disks."
In the last paragraph in the section, add "You can
also create an Emergency Disk by running the
Interview and clicking Next until you reach the
Emergency Disk page."
2.5
Chapter: 3, "Quick Tour of Guard Dog"
Section: "How password protection effects Guard Dog"
Page: 16
In "To retrieve your Guard Dog password" replace the
procedure with the following text, "1. When you try to
use a Guard Dog password-protected feature, the Guard
Dog Password dialog box appears. In the dialog box,
click OK. The Guard Dog Login Failed dialog box appears.
2. Insert the first disk of your Emergency Disk set into
your floppy disk drive and click Browse.
3. Click the icon for your floppy disk drive and click OK.
2.6
Chapter: 5, "Guard Dog Privacy Features"
Section: "What Cookie Blocker does"
Page: 36
Replace the text in the table for `Guard Dog does
this' (under `Never accept') to "Rejects the cookie
and adds the site to the Rejected list. The next
time you go to that site, all cookies from the site
are refused automatically. (In some cases, the
cookie may be written to your local hard disk, but
your privacy is protected because the cookie is
never sent back to the requesting page.)"
2.7
Chapter: 5, "Guard Dog Privacy Features"
Section: "What Identity Protector does"
Page: 38
Replace the text in the first paragraph on the page
to "information sent to an unsecure site with an `x' for
each character entered. For example, if your child
tries to order the latest CD without entering your
Guard Dog password, Guard Dog replaces your credit
card number with `xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx.'"
2.8
Chapter: 6, "Guard Dog Security Features"
Section: "Program starts up another program"
Page: 44
Replace the first sentence under the section heading
with "When one program starts to run another
program, Guard Dog checks to see if you've
authorized this action. If you haven't allowed the
program to always open the other program, Guard Dog
displays an alert message."
2.9
Appendix: A, "About Internet Security and Privacy"
Section: "What can I do to keep my stuff safe?"
Page: 63
Replace all text starting in the last paragraph with
"For more information see" until the end of the page
with "For more information, see `How can I tell if a
Web site is secure?' "
