- 3,INTRODUCTION
- 4,by Simon Plumbe and Colin Gunn
-
- Hi and welcome once again to The Final Frontier. Well, this issue is
- something of a landmark for TFF with a completely re-designed front-
- end, as well as a myriad of other changes in the style and
- presentation of the mag.
-
- Obviously, the major change this time around (and if you haven't
- noticed it yet, we'd advise you to visit your optician pretty damn
- quick) is the new menu system coded by Luke Elliott. Based on the TNG
- computer system, the menu is probably one of the most user-friendly,
- flexible and powerful menu systems ever seen on an Amiga disk zine.
-
- Why? Well, as well as being able to handle an unlimited number of
- menus and sub-menus, it can also play music (including support for a
- variety of music packages including Protracker and MED) and sampled
- sound effects, display text (with full printer support), be keyboard
- or mouse controlled, show graphics in all Amiga gfx modes (including
- all AGA modes), run slideshows, and even play quiz games!! And if you
- think we've pushed disk mags to their limit, that's not all... for
- future issues we'll be adding animation and CD support (for CD audio
- for those of you with CDTVs, A570s or CD32s with floppy drives) and
- many more features. All this and it runs quite happily on all 1MB
- Amigas!!
-
- It's not just the menu system that's changed however. We've also re-
- structured the menus to make the articles easier to find, larger
- articles are now being broken down into smaller files, making them
- easier to read and the reduced column width makes it even easier on
- the eye to read. In short, it's not just a facelift - TFF #7 is, in
- effect, a totally NEW magazine!!
-
- The new menu however, is one of the reasons that led to the delay in
- releasing this issue. We were hoping to have released this issue over
- a month ago, but the menu system has undergone several revisions and
- bug-fixes since it was first written and the de-bugged version is
- what you see before you. As well as this, a large number of our
- regular features that are updated for each issue (the Pocket Books
- Guide and the Fan Club Guide to name but two) have had to be
- completely re-edited for the new screen layout (69 columns as opposed
- to 78), taking longer than ever before to prepare!
-
- Also, we have had a vast proportion of the articles etc. for this
- issue submitted on paper which has meant that we have had to spend
- valuable time typing up other people's articles rather than writing
- our own, causing even more of a delay. Because of this, we are now
- taking on people as members of Infinite Frontiers to help out behind
- the scenes on the mag's production, including typing. This, couple
- with the fact that we are starting to get more new writers interested
- in working on TFF, should mean that the next issue should be out
- within the next four months, as opposed to the usual five.
-
- With saying that, we haven't been resting on our laurels and we have
- already released a large number of titles this year including the
- follow-ups to our successful Trek slideshow series in the form of
- Holodeck 3, Holodeck 4 and Holodeck 5, along with the enhanced high
- density version of Holodeck II. As well as that, we finally released
- our sci-fi and fantasy slideshow, Illusions, featuring art from a
- large number of the IF crew including Tobias Richter with music from
- Allister Brimble.
-
- Special things to look out for in this issue include almost all of
- disk three which is devoted to the Borg, featuring a generous
- sprinkling of articles, reviews and features on everyone's favourite
- semi-mechanical beings.
-
- As well as that, there is an exclusive feature and interview with
- Swedish pop group S.P.O.C.K - no prizes for guessing what they sing
- about!!
-
- Also we see our first ever piece of AGA specific artwork, namely "The
- Orion Incident" by the one and only Tobias Richter which can be found
- in both HAM (for older machines) and HAM-8 (for the A1200/A4000)
- versions. As well as this, there is another helping of art from Mark
- Platts including a host of images to accompany the Borg special.
-
- On the music front we have a smaller selection of songs than normal,
- but this is how things will be for TFF in the future. With all four
- disks of TFF being accessed from just one set of menus and the need
- to boot from each disk separately being removed, you can now listen
- to any tune to any article, so although there are less songs than
- last time, you, the reader, have more CHOICE! Out of the tracks we do
- have, there are a couple of great pieces from TFF regular, Bjorn
- Lynne along with a piece from Paul Draaisma. And to top it all off is
- the star song of this issue - Allister Brimble's remix of Alien Breed
- 2!!!
-
- Another special highlight is a competition, but this isn't like any
- other competition we've run before. We are only mentioning some of
- the prizes now and more will be added depending on how many of you
- enter, so the more that enter, the more prizes there will be and the
- greater your chances are of winning. However, this competition isn't
- on any of the menus - it's hidden! See if you can find it!
-
- Also, we have taken on board a few new members who we are certain are
- going to make a big difference to the team and are going to show the
- sort of commitment we are looking for in our regular staff and there
- are a number of others that we are looking at getting involved in the
- production of the mag. All these changes should see TFF coming out a
- little more frequently before and, hopefully, the content will be
- better too!
-
- One thing we would like to stress is that we are still in need of
- more material for TFF. Although we are now starting to get more of a
- response from you, our readers, following our pleas both in TFF and
- Amiga Format, we still need more articles. Sadly, most of the people
- who have replied to our requests are artists and although we always
- welcome more artwork, without text TFF is nothing. What with our
- future projects, slideshows, utilities and new magazines and our
- forthcoming convention, we have less time than ever to devote to TFF,
- so please give some serious consideration to writing for us!
-
- For those of you who are think of writing for TFF, or are interested
- in submitting music or graphics, send us an A5 sized SAE for our
- soon-to-be printed Writer's Guide for TFF, detailing how to write,
- draw and compose for TFF, what formats we want the material in and
- much more. Too much information to mention in our Contribution
- details file! Send for your free copy now! Write to: The Final
- Frontier Writers Guide, PO Box 8966, Great Barr, Birmingham, B43 5ST,
- ENGLAND. The first edition of the guide should be ready by mid-June
- '94.
-
- We're also still not getting enough feedback from you for our regular
- features such as the Q&A section or the letters column. We also want
- to hear what you think of TFF and any suggestions for how we can
- improve it - I'm sure you can ALL think of some way in which the
- menu/mag can be improved in some way. Above all else, remember this
- is YOUR magazine, so get writing!
-
- Also, we have now got a couple of dedicated phone lines just for the
- magazine and convention instead of our home phone numbers! From now
- on, if you want to phone Infinite Frontiers for any reason, use the
- following number:
-
- 0860 948296 (Simon)
-
- Please note that this is a mobile phone and calls to these will be
- charged at the usual BT rate to mobiles. We would prefer it if you
- DON'T call our home numbers unless you are given the number by us
- from now on (for those of you who regularly write and call us).
-
- Finally, a few congratulations are in order for a few people in
- Infinite Frontiers. First is John Kitts and his wife Dee who are
- celebrating the birth of their first child, Deanna Beverly (no Trek
- connection there, honest!) born on 1st April 1994. Congratulations.
-
- Next is a big surprise to all of us here - two members of Infinite
- Frontiers have just got engaged... to each other!!! Yes, Sven Harvey
- and his girlfriend Claire Higgins recently got engaged (everybody -
- aaah!). Best wishes from all of Infinite Frontiers go to both of you!
-
- See you in the next issue,
