- ║ Stacker v2.0 ║
- ║ Data Compression Program ║

-
-
- The first computer I bought came with a 30MB hard drive.
- WOW! This was top-of-the-line. Today, you can buy one program that uses
- more than that. OS/2 version 2.0. Stacker is not yet available for OS/2;
- but should be by years end.
-
- MS Windows users can also feel the crunch. A full installation of
- both MS Windows and MS Word for Windows, can be close to 25MB. What is the
- answer? You could buy a larger hard drive. Or, you could buy Stacker. A
- larger hard drive will cost about $400 or more. Stacker is about $100 on
- the street.
-
- Stacker supports any DOS disk including floppies; Bernoulli drives;
- RAM drives; IDE, MFM, SCSI, RLL. They do not show support of ESDI, but I
- have such a drive, and had no problems whatsoever installing it. The
- average compression ratio is 2:1, but can go as high as 16:1 on some files.
- On faster systems you may not notice any slowdown in speed. However, if you
- wish, you can buy their STACKER AT/16 Hardware package. This consists of a
- coprocessor card and the Stacker software. Using this combination, will not
- only speed up your system, but also reduce the memory that Stacker uses,
- while also compressing the hard drive about 15% better, than without the
- card. Using the coprocessor card also switches the compression and
- decompression from the computer's memory to the data compression circuitry
- of the card. They also make Stacker MC/16 Hardware, which is for Micro
- Channel-based computers.
-
-
- INSTALLATION
- ------------
-
- Before installing Stacker, you should follow these few guidelines:
-
- * Back Up drives.
-
- * If you are using DOS 3.3, and are going to upgrade to DOS 5.0,
- you should do this BEFORE installing Stacker. This will allow you to have
- larger partitions.
-
- * Log Off LANs
-
- * Uninstall any copy protected software you have.
-
- * Disable any AntiVirus program. After installation, you can
- re-enable it.
-
- * You should install Stacker from DOS. Close any running
- applications or environments like Windows, DESQview, or WordPerfect Office.
-
-
- Stacker is so simple to install, that no technical knowledge is
- needed. For the novice it is a piece of cake. Just insert the disk in
- either A: or B: (comes with both 5.25 and 3.5 disks), type INSTALL, press
- RETURN, and just accept all the defaults. Stacker does all the work.
-
-
- When you finish you will have another drive letter on your system.
- If you originally had C: and D:, you will now also have E:. If you decided
- to compress the C: drive, Stacker will use SSWAP, which will make drive E:
- into drive C:, so you retain all of your files and other information. If
- you do not understand this, just reboot your system, and you will have
- everything as it was; with the exception of having more space on your
- drive. For each drive that you compress, Stacker creates a file named
- STACVOL.XXX on the host drive. This is a hidden file and should NEVER be
- deleted or altered in any way. Doing so will destroy ALL your files on that
- drive.
-
- STACKER FACTS

- * Works with MS-DOS and PC-DOS from 3.0 to 5.0. Also works with DR
- DOS 5.0 and 6.0.

- * Works on IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible computers.
-
- * Works with MS Windows 3.0 and 3.1, DESQview. GeoWorks, GEM and
- others.
-
- * Works with Norton Utilities, PC Tools and others
-
- * Works with disk caching of PC Tools, NCACHE, Super PC-Kwik
-
- * Can load high using DOS 5's DEVICEHIGH, QEMM/386, QRAM for 286
- systems, and Move 'EM

-
- Stacker 2.0 comes with a command assistant. This will come up with
- a window. As you highlight each command, it explains it usage on the bottom
- of the box. If for example, you find you need more free space, you can have
- the program shrink or expand a Stacker volume.
-
- A special version of Norton SpeedDisk is included with Stacker, to
- optimize your Stacker volume. You should NEVER run any other optimizer on a
- Stacker volume. However, you can run any optimizer you use on the host
- drive.
-
- Backing up your hard drives also does not change. You can use your
- favorite program. You should back up the actual files on the Stacker
- volume, rather than the STACVOL.XXX from the HOST drive. When backing up
- the host drive deselect the STACVOL.XXX file, then using the drive letter
- for the Stacker drive, backup all the files. This not only gives you a
- better way to restore should it be necessary, but it will also take up less
- space during backup, as you are not backing up the whole drive, as you
- would be using STACVOL.XXX, but rather only the actual files that are using
- disk space.
-
- MS Windows allows you to have a permanent or temporary swap file.
- The permanent swap file MUST be set up on a un-Stacked drive. This could be
- a drive you did not use Stacker on, or a Host drive for the STACVOL.XXX. If
- you already have a permanent Windows swap file when Stacker is installed,
- INSTALL will ask you to allow it to be removed. After the Stacker drive is
- created, INSTALL will leave space for you to create a new swap file.
- Temporary and application swap files can be created on any drive.
-
- When you Stack drive C:, it creates duplicates of your CONFIG.SYS
- and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the Stacker drive. Each time you make any changes
- to these, upon re-booting, you are asked if you wish the copies updated.
- The one exception to this is when using QEMM's Optimize program. Optimize
- changes these files several times. Stacker is QEMM aware, so you will see a
- message saying that it is aware that Optimize is running, and changes the
- files automatically as needed.
-
- There are certain files that Stacker will not compress. These are
- files with extensions like .ZIP, .ARC, .PAK, .LHA, .ZOO. These files are
- already compressed and therefore cannot be shrunk any more. If most of the
- files that are on your system are these types, then Stacker is not for you.
- If you are like the millions of us who run HUGE programs like Excel, 1-2-3,
- Word, WordPerfect, WordStar and the like, then Stacker should ease the
- crunch for you. Doesn't anybody make a program on one or two disks anymore?
-
-
- Stacker has been selected the best in it is class, by PC Magazine
- and others. It has also received the highest rating of disk compression
- programs from Software Digest. There was one program that was better than
- Stacker software. That was Stacker with the coprocessor card.
