  5. Giant  Robo, apart from being the most
  6. unoriginal name to come of Japan for a
  7. long  time,  is  Manga  Video's latest
  8. release on to the unsuspecting public.

  12. The  story behind Giant Robo is set in
  13. a   world  dependant  on  the  Shizuma
  14. Drive,  a  new  energy source which is
  15. totally  renewable.   Everyone classes
  16. the Drive as perfection itself but, of
  17. course,  there  is  a  shadow  on  the
  18. scene.

  20. Big  Fire  is a terrorist organisation
  21. whose main objective, like every other
  22. terrorist   organisation  you  see  in
  23. films,  is world domination.  In order
  24. to  do  this they aim to recreate "The
  25.  
  26.  
  27.  
  28.  
  29. Tragedy",  an  incident  in Bashtarlle
  30. during  the  testing  of  a  prototype
  31. Shizuma  Drive in which almost a third
  32. of  the  world's population were wiped
  33. out  in  one fell swoop.  The incident
  34. is  shrouded  in  mystery  and  all we
  35. learn  of it in this episode is of the
  36. Dr Franken Von Folger.

  38. But   don't  worry  The  International
  39. Police  Organisation  and it's Experts
  40. Of  Justice  are  here  to  protect us
  41. against   the   might  of  Big  Fire's
  42. Magnificent Ten.  I know the names are
  43. verging  on  the  corny side but don't
  44. let it discourage you.  This really is
  45. one of Manga's gems.

  47. The  Giant  Robo  of the title, as you
  48. would  expect,  is  a massive fuck-off
  49. metal   motherfucker   that  is  voice
  50. commanded  by  the 12 year old Diasaku
  51. Kusama.   Why  is  it  that  a  stupid
  52. little  kid that probably doesn't know
  53. how  to  blow his nose gets a chuck of
  54. metal  death for Christmas?  Most kids
  55. will  settle  for  a  PC ...a chuck of
  56. plastic shyte!

  58. The  other  Experts Of Justice include
  59. Ginrei  (a  young  woman  with a shady
  60. past   that   is  not  revealed  until
  61. episode  five), Tetsugyu (a fat bloke,
  62.

  69.  
  70.  
  71.  
  72.  
  73. who  has  a  soft  spot for Ginrei and
  74. oftens  feels  her attention to him is
  75. compromised by Diasaku's presence) and
  76. Taisou  (a  martial artist and general
  77. tough guy, but he likes nothing better
  78. than  to drink loads of rice wine with
  79. Tetsugyu   whom   he  classes  as  his
  80. younger brother).

  82. Whereas  some  of  the  more prominent
  83. members  of  Big  Fire  (and all round
  84. people  you wouldn't like to meet in a
  85. dark  alley after you've spilled their
  86. pint!) are Lord Alberto (the leader of
  87. Big  Fire,  who  has  a grudge against
  88. Taisou  for  ripping  one of his eye's
  89. out),  Ivan  (Lord Alberto's sidekick,
  90. and  altogether  sneaky  bloke), Genya
  91. (son  of the mysterious Dr Franken Von
  92. Folger,  who  has  taken leadership of
  93. Big   Fire)   and   Mr  Ko-Enshaku  (a
  94. mysterious   character   that  remains
  95. loyal to protecting Genya).

  97. What  hits you about Giant Robo is the
  98. quality   of   the   animation.    The
  99. creators  have  opted to put more work
  100. into   the   animation,   rather  than
  101. drawing  the  artwork  in  any detail.
  102. This    means    that   the   finished
  103. production has a more cartoony look to
  104. it, but works great.

  106. This  first  episode has to be classed
  107. as   good  value  for  money  as  it's
  108. duration  is  listed  as 30 minutes on
  109. the  inlay, but it runs for a least 45
  110. minutes  on the actual video.  So, for
  111. only £5.99 it has to be one of Manga's
  112. better buys.

  114. Overall, Giant Robo is a classic piece
  115. of  anime  hidden  behind  some  truly
  116. awful names.  The series is split into
  117. seven parts.
