  5. Amiga Frontier, now that sounds like a
  6. nice,  respectable diskmag.  Dedicated
  7. to bringing you the latest information
  8. on   technical  Amiga  matters.   It's
  9. serious!   There's  no  time for jokes
  10. when there's a brand new hard drive to
  11. be  reviewed.  Yeah, that sounds about
  12. right.  Nice and respectable.

  18. I  have now realised what people meant
  19. when  they used to say that there were
  20. no  serious Amiga users.  I mistook it
  21. by  thinking they were refering to the
  22. gamers.   But  no,  they  were  simply
  23. saying  that  everyone  that  uses the
  24. Amiga  is completely OUTTA THEIR HEAD!

  29. The  guyz that make Amiga Frontier are
  30. prime  examples  of this, and that's a
  31. complement!

  33. Enough  of  all this wibbling (I'm not
  34. crazy, I'm a potato!), onto the actual
  35. mag.   Amiga  Frontier  hails from the
  36. place they like to call Merseyside.  A
  37. place   where   everybody  wears  pink
  38. shellsuits  and  says stuff like "EHH,
  39. EHH!   CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN!" and "ARE
  40. YOU  STARTIN'  ??".   (Oh  shit, I bet
  41. I've begun something now!)

  43. Although,  the  sixth  issue  may have
  44. been   released,  at  the  time  I  am
  45. writing this, issue five is the latest
  46. one  I  have.   This  is  yet  another
  47. diskzine created using DMC Gold, which
  48. must   be  responsible  for  half  the
  49. magazines  in  the  PD  scene  at  the
  50. moment.   I'll  only  write  about the
  51. last  two  issues  because, although I
  52. have  copies  of  them, issues one and
  53.

  61. two were never officially released and
  62. issue  three has lost itself somewhere
  63. in the depths of my diskbox.  Besides,
  64. MSCIM  has  told  me  that they may be
  65. re-releasing   the   first  couple  of
  66. editions at a later date.

  70. Amiga Frontier Five includes, like all
  71. the  issues, one of AF's (ALElectronic
  72. Farts) famous intros.  This time it is
  73. the UNOFFICIAL sequel to Nine Fingers,
  74. or    more   accurately   it's   MSCIM
  75. experiencing  an  epileptic fit to the
  76. soundtrack  of  the  Spaceball's demo.
  77. Admittedly,   it's  only  a  digitised
  78. animation  accompanied by a mod player
  79. and  it  ain't coded.  But it's highly
  80. amusing  seeing  some  mad guy dancing
  81. (if  you  can  call it that) like he's
  82. off his head.  Well, he's actually one
  83. of  my contax and I can verify that he
  84. really is more loony than a COW (think
  85. about it!).

  87. Once  the  mag  begins  to  load,  the
  88. introduction  screen  is  the spaceman
  89. picture  from  Personal  Paint with an
  90. Amiga  Frontier  logo  situated in the
  91. top  right  corner.  After this, we're
  92. in!    The   muzik   that   forms  the
  93. soundtrack  of  the  magazine  is well
  94. chosen in that it is background muzik.
  95. What  I mean by this is that there are
  96. no  booming rave or dance modules that
  97. grab  your  attention.  Just some nice
  98. relaxing  tunes  that  don't  distract
  99. your  concentration  from  the  actual
  100. text  itself.   (It  ain't something I
  101. can   preach  about  though.   I  been
  102. guilty  many  a  time of choosing ravy
  103. muziks!)  Well,  this  is  x'cept  the
  104. second module which is a bit weird and
  105. comical, but this goes with the nature
  106. of the zany style of the magazine as a
  107. whole.

  109. I've  got  this far and I haven't even
  110. mentioned  the  articles  yet.   Well,
  111. this  issue  is of particular interest
  112. because  they  review Beyond Sanit-E 2
  113. and   give   an   overwhelming  NINETY
  114. PERCENT!   (Thanx, we appreciated it!)
  115. Most  of the articles, wether they are
  116. essentially  a  serious  or  humourous
  117. subject,  are written in the style of:
  118. Why  should  we write this review, for
  119. example, as a plain report when we can
  120. have a laugh at the same time!
  121. The  result  is  a  diskmag that leans
  122. more  on  making you laugh rather than
  123. being  solely  informative,  and  this
  124. gives   it  character.   The  articles
  125. themselves tend to be based around the
  126. Amiga   (as   the   name  of  the  mag
  127. suggests)  as  far  as  the topics are
  128. concerned.     These    include,   for
  129. example:  news, software, hardware, PD
  130. and   a   special  feature  about  the
  131. Internet  (or Information Superhighway
  132. if ya wanna talk like a puff!).

  134. Then   there   are   all  the  regular
  135. features   such   as   the   superstar
  136. joystick  known  as Kevin.  Look guyz,
  137. you always have a cat as a mascot, not
  138. a  joystick.   Take  Pazza  of LSD and
  139. Steve  of  V12-PD for example.  A cat!
  140. Not  an  inanimate  object!  It's just
  141. the  tradition  on  the  scene.  See I
  142. told  ya  these  guyz  were  crazy.  I
  143. mean,   what  you're  doing  could  be
  144. classed  as  exploitation.  Does Kevin
  145. have  a  written  and signed contract,
  146. witnessed  by  his solicitor?  Imagine
  147. the  uproar  from  the  whole  "gaming
  148. devices"  community  after the blatent
  149. show   of  naked  plastic  you  aren't
  150. shamed to parade around your magazine.

  154. Overall,  it's not coded in pure 680XX
  155. Assembler   and  it's  doesn't  use  a
  156. custom  written  trackloader.   But if
  157. you  judge  a diskmag on entertainment
  158. value     rather     than    technical
  159. excellence,  then  you'll  enjoy Amiga
  160. Frontier.

  164. The   fourth   incarnation   of  Amiga
  165. Frontier   has  one  of  my  favourite
  166. intros  to  date.   Basically it's the
  167. "Looks  like  a  pile of shite!" song.
  168. You  really  have  to  hear it to know
  169. what the attraction is.
  170. I  also thought that this was the most
  171. graphically  pleasing  issue so far in
  172. that   the   control   panel  and  the
  173. introduction  screens  in  the mag had
  174. some  real  design put into them.
  175.  
  176. The  special  feature in this issue is
  177. about  using your Amiga in video work.
  178. Actually,  I'd better double-check the
  179. mag  ain't  called Amiga Format.  Have
  180. you  noticed how they seem to dedicate
  181. almost every issue of Amiga Doormat as
  182. a  shrine  to the camcorder!

  184. Anywayz,   (and  that,  to  any  Amiga
  185. Frontier   readers,  is  a  much  more
  186. sensible  way  of spelling ANYWAY.  If
  187. ya  don't  know what I'm talking about
  188. then you'd better grab yourself a copy
  189. of Amiga Frontier.  (Boy, was that the
  190. easiest tenner I've made!)) the actual
  191. mag  follows  the same format as issue
  192. five, as most Amiga Frontier's use the
  193. same format as each other.

  197. Well, I've only got one real critisium
  198. with Amiga Frontier as a whole, and it
  199. is  that the mag seems to be set up to
  200. work  on an A1200 and no machine below
  201. it.   For example, I dunno if this was
  202. done intentionally but the second disk
  203. of AF5 was formatted to a specific KS3
  204. standard.  Therefore, the mag wouldn't
  205. run  on  my  A600  at  all.  But after
  206. altering the filing system of disk two
  207. into the Fast File System, it made the
  208. mag   KS2   compatible  automatically.
  209. Maybe,  when  I  get  an A1200 I'll go
  210. completely    AGA-only   but   I'm   a
  211. hypocrite like that!

  213. Finally,  this  is  a great little mag
  214. that  you could do a lot worse than to
  215. have a gander at.
