- Artistix Review
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Anything that's keeps kids shut up over Christmas has got to be a
- good thing so what we have here then is an art package written
- with kids in mind. There seems to be quite a few art programs
- appearing at the moment all designed for children and this is one
- of them. Quite why people seem to be writing paint programs for
- children is beyond me but there definitely seems to be a market
- there. Surely the attention span of a child is severely limited
- and I can't imagine one sitting down at the computer painting for
- hours on end. Obviously, I'm wrong as Andrew Campbell (again)
- has made a respectable amount of money from this program. As you
- may have noticed, I mentioned money. Well Artistix is a
- Shareware program so if you like it, you're meant to send the
- author £5 for his troubles. Upon payment, you will receive the
- full version. So is it worth it.........?
-
- So what can Artistix do then? Well you can paint pictures,
- scrawl, doodle and just generally mess around. Several example
- pictures are included on the disk of the demo version and they
- can be loaded in for the child to generally mess around with.
- The Save feature has been disabled so their work cannot be saved.
- Also, some of the other painting functions has been disabled.
- Most of the painting functions lean towards the plain silly
- although they might keep children amused for a while. Of course
- all the usual drawing tools are there such as line draw, circles
- and boxes so proper pictures can be drawn.
-
- The user-interface is very large to say the least and takes over
- half the screen. The reason for this is because the icons are
- very large and colourful, so they can be associated with the
- drawing tools more easily. There is certainly an impressive
- range of drawing tools and each one can be used from the large
- icons, no pull-down menus here. I don't think children will have
- much trouble using it.
-
- So that's all there is to it. It's easy to use, colourful and
- quite speedy so the little monsters won't get too bored. A few
- more colour-in pictures could have been included though. Also,
- where were the instructions? Even though this is a demo there
- should still be some. So the payment of the shareware fee should
- be high on your list of priorities, otherwise you'll get the
- constant chorus of 'I'm bored!!'.

- Artistix - Summary
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- DOCUMENTATION : 0/10
-
- Where are the instructions Mr Campbell? Even though there
- aren't any, the program is easy enough to use without them.
-
- USER INTERFACE : 9/10
-
- Big, bold and colourful although it does tend to get in the
- way at times. Pressing the right mouse button removes it
- though.
-
- EASE OF USE : 9/10
-
- It's written for kids so it's got to be easy.
-
- SPEED : 10/10
-
- Nippy enough.
-
- RELIABILITY : 8/10
-
- There's a few bugs but they don't usually appear. In the
- registered version they have all been removed anyway.
-
- FLEXIBILITY : 5/10
-
- It's no serious rival to Deluxe Paint but it's not intended
- to be.
-

-
- £5 is the average price for most shareware titles but will
- your kids use it enough to make your investment worthwhile?
-

- on it as well. Recommended.
