  9.      vlan_alive - determines the status of a VLAN transmitter

  15.      _v_l_a_n__a_l_i_v_e determines whether a VLAN transmitter is connected to the
  16.      serial port specified by _s_e_r_i_a_l__d_e_v. If _s_e_r_i_a_l__d_e_v is not specified the
  17.      defualt serial port, /dev/ttyd2 (port 2), is used.  If a VLAN transmitter
  18.      is connected, it's network format (ie. NTSC or PAL) is determined. A
  19.      message is printed on _s_t_d_e_r_r indicating the status of the VLAN
  20.      controller. In addition, the exit status code indicates the controller
  21.      status.  If the ----qqqq option is specified, no message is printed and only
  22.      the exit status is returned.

  25.      The exit status codes are as follows:

  27.      0    A VLAN transmitter is not connected to the specified serial port.

  29.      1    An NTSC network format VLAN transmitter is connected to the
  30.           specified serial port.

  32.      2    An PAL network format VLAN transmitter is connected.
  33.  
  34.      3    A VLAN transmitter is connected to the specified serial port, but
  35.           the network format is not recognized.
