- The _a_r_p program displays and modifies the Internet-to-Ethernet address
- translation tables used by the address resolution protocol (_a_r_p(7P)).
-
- With no flags, the program displays the current ARP entry for _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e.
- The host can be specified by name or by number, using Internet dot
- notation.
-
- The _a_r_p flags are:
-
- ----aaaa Display all of the current ARP entries by reading the table from the
- routing socket.
-
- ----cccc Clear all of the current non-permanent ARP entries from the table.
-
- ----dddd _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e
- A superuser can delete an entry for the host called _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e.
-
- ----ssss _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e _e_t_h_e_r__a_d_d_r
- Creates an ARP entry for the host called _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e with the Ethernet
- address _e_t_h_e_r__a_d_d_r. The Ethernet address is given as six hexadecimal
- bytes separated by colons. The entry is permanent unless the word
- tttteeeemmmmpppp is given in the command. If the word ppppuuuubbbb is given, the entry is
- published, that is, this system will act as an ARP server responding
- to requests for _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e even though the host address is not its own.
- If pppprrrrooooxxxxyyyy----oooonnnnllllyyyy is given, the entry is published, but it will not be
- used by this system for packets send to _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e, which can be useful
- when _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e is reached by other means such as a PPP link.
-
- ----ffff _f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e
- Causes the file _f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e to be read and multiple entries to be set in
- the ARP tables. Entries in the file should be of the form:
-
-
- _h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e _e_t_h_e_r__a_d_d_r [ tttteeeemmmmpppp ] [ ppppuuuubbbb ] [ pppprrrrooooxxxxyyyy----oooonnnnllllyyyy ]
-
- with argument meanings as given above.
-
- ----nnnn Causes mapping of IP addresses to hostnames to be suppressed.

-
- aaaarrrrpppp((((1111MMMM)))) aaaarrrrpppp((((1111MMMM))))
-
-
-
- ----vvvv Causes additional information to be displayed, such as the interface
- associated with entries and the age of the arp entries. Only a
- superuser may use this flag.
-
