Transcription: The first long-distance rocket was the Fageltungswaffe 2, or V2, used in attacks on London from continental launching pads in the mid-forties. American and Soviet scientists based their research and development almost entirely on the V2, culminating in the eventful day in 1957 when a similar rocket was used to put Sputnik 1 into orbit. Since then, over 2,500 large-scale rockets have been launched.
