Transcription: In the early days of mining, miners would descend into the earth with a candle attached to their helmets. This was extremely dangerous as the flame could ignite any buildup of flammable gas. Obviously there was a requirement for a safe light source and the Davy lamp fulfilled this function for many years until electric lamps became practical. With the invention of batteries, the torch soon became a commonly used item, and one can usually be found close at hand in most households.
