  1. Large binary posts do not belong in unmoderated discussion groups.

  3. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  4. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  5. hierarchies.
  6.  
  7. I have issued 23 cancels for large binary files (average size 112,665
  8. characters - total size 2,591,300 characters) posted to 7 different
  9. unmoderated discussion groups in the comp, rec, and sci hierarchies
  10. (with cross-posts into microsoft groups) as follows:
  11.   13 comp.graphics.animation
  12.    4 comp.emulators.apple2
  13.    2 comp.emulators.mac.executor
  14.    1 sci.med.nursing
  15.    1 rec.sport.unicycling
  16.    1 rec.arts.manga
  17.    1 comp.os.ms-windows.setup.win95
  18.     microsoft.public.win95.setup

  20. The cancels in non-targeted groups are a consequence of the way
  21. cross-posts work.  A cross-posted article has only one Message-ID.
  22. When it is canceled from one group it is canceled from all groups.

  33. The criteria used to search for this batch of large binaries were:
  34.    NEWSGROUPS: Unmoderated akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, or sci
  35.            (except for comp.binaries.apple2, comp.bugs.2bsd,
  36.         and rec.games.bolo)
  37.    BINARY: base64, binhex, uuencode, and xbtoa encoded files, etc.
  38.    SIZE: > 100,000 characters [(size * (# of parts - .5)), if multi-part]

  40. If you must post a binary to Usenet, please post it *only* to an
  41. appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc, and do *not*
  42. crosspost it to non-binaries groups.  Then, if you like, post something
  43. in the appropriate discussion group telling people where to find the
  44. binary in the binaries group (a pointer to the binary).  This will
  45. permit news administrators and users to decide for themselves whether
  46. to receive the binary files.
