- Remember my posting about the need for ethertalk? Well, the native need is
- still there, but I got a taste of what it could be like, hooking your PC up
- to an all-mac network and sharing everything over Ethernet without breaking
- a sweat.
-
- Right now (after another marathon session of tweaking system parameters -
- anybody know how I can increase conventional memory???), I have Farallon's
- PhoneNet 3.0 installed and working on my laptop. Truely, if you were
- wishing that PC's had the ease of networking that every Mac has coming out
- of the box, this is the next thing you'd get after Executor (to run all
- those Mac apps, of course!)
-
- With this installed (and nothing else in resident memory, in order to have
- enough space for everything to load), I can attach to my PowerMac (which I
- made a server for the time being) and make lpt1 my network laser printer
- (takes care of my printing problems!). When attaching to the server's
- drives, you make each in turn D:, E:, etc. - very cool, but cooler still
- when you run Executor afterwards...
-
- Ha! Now I have a direct ethernet link to my PowerMac's drives and CD roms,
- all while running Executor on my PC notebook! I can work with the same
- data files in Executor (like Quicken, etc.), switch to Windows (if I can
- ever figure out how to do it without having to reboot Executor to fix the
- video) and then work with Photoshop, Pagemaker, etc. for applications that
- are native.
-
- The only bad thing here is that, because networking is handled through the
- Windows/DOS side of things, and all Executor sees is that network drive,
- all the files on my PowerMac show up like PC files - ie, in Executor, Apps
- don't show up as apps, and filenames are truncated to 8.3 character names.
- I'm doing the workaround with Stuffit on this end and the other, but it
- would be a heck of a lot easier if I could just manipulate directly. It'd
- be even cooler to see the icons, but again - I wait for E/D 3.0, like
- everyone else.
-
- Now all I need to do is figure out how to make my laptop an AppleTalk server...

-
- BTW: Does anyone know a net-based source for updated video and sound
- drivers? This CTX notebook works pretty well, but I think Executor would
- work better (ie, switch to Windows & back, have sound) if I updated the
- drivers...
