  2. E/L 1.99q9 running under FreeBSD 2.1R (XFree86 3.1.1)
  3. 486DX4/100, pretty typical system with SCSI drive (Adaptec 1542CP 
  4. controller), 16 MB RAM
  5. Running MSWord 5.1a in the Executor environment
  6.  
  7. *NOTE* This is a FreeBSD system.  I wish I had a linux system to test it 
  8. on, but unfortunately hardware is scarce in this household.  If any kind 
  9. soul out there who has Linux, Executor, and MSWord has a few free clock 
  10. cycles and wouldn't mind testing this to see if it is a real bug or not, 
  11. please do so, I'd appreciate it greatly.

  13. Anyway, here's the bug: I was working on a file, and saved it as "FAQ- 
  14. Running Executor under FreeBSD".  AFAIK this is a valid Mac filename, and 
  15. Word didn't complain because it allowed me to save under that name.  Ok, 
  16. so the file is there (I checked).  I shutdown my computer because it was 
  17. bedtime.

  19. I got up the next morning and decided to continue working on this file (I 
  20. wasn't done yet).  I fired up Executor and ran MSWord.  I went to the 
  21. "File...Open" dialog and tried to retrieve the file.  BUT IT DID NOT 
  22. APPEAR IN THE "OPEN FILE" DIALOG BOX.  I popped open a UNIX shell window 
  23. and did an ls.  It's not my imagination; the file really did exist.  
  24. Weird.  Furthermore, the file appeared under the MSWord "last <x> 
  25. documents" list, and I am able to select it there and the file DOES 
  26. open.

  28. I then looked in Browser, and the file DID NOT APPEAR IN THE BROWSER 
  29. WINDOWS EITHER.

  31. FYI the file was saved in the UNIX filesystem, NOT in a "hfv" file.  I 
  32. tried saving this file in a HFV file, and I got the error "Disk not 
  33. found" from MSWord.

  35. There's either one of three things wrong here:
  36.  
  37. a) "FAQ- Running Executor under FreeBSD" is NOT a valid Mac filename, and
  38.    either Word and/or Executor was at fault in NOT telling me "hey, that's
  39.    not a good filename" when I saved it.
  40. b) "FAQ- Running Executor under FreeBSD" IS a valid filename, and
  41.    something is wrong with Executor's filesystem handling code or something.
  42. c) This is a FreeBSD-specific problem, and does not happen under other
  43.    Executors (i.e. running under real Linux, or DOS, or whatnot).  This
  44.    is why I would be very grateful if someone who has a Linux or other
  45.    system could test this for me.

  47. Enclosed please find a TAR file containig the bad file I mentioned.  As 
  48. stated, this is a MSWord 5.1a document.
