  11. Netatalk "spoofs" the connection when transferring files to and from a
  12. MacIntosh.  The only reason they are stored in seperate directories is so
  13. they can possibly be useable in Unix.  If a Mac reconnects and afpd sees the
  14. .AppleDouble directory, it checks for associated resources to the particular
  15. file.  They are recombined and sent back to the Mac.  The Mac only sees a
  16. single binary stream.

  18. Without going into elaborate detail, netatalk was originally designed to
  19. allow people with Macs and Unix boxes to share useable (ie, source code,
  20. text files).  That is why there is a very extensive mapping configuration
  21. for mapping files from the Unix side to the Mac side.  The problem isn't
  22. usually too bad the other way around.

  24. If you need to copy binaries "as-is", check the netatalk docs.  Look for the
  25. filters section.  I'm not sure if that will help, but it's the right place
