- Having finally got a chance to play with 1.99 p9 and q for DOS (too much
- work lately...) I can report that Broderbund's "Just Grandma and Me"
- CD-ROM works under both p9 and q with sound. (Up to and including 1.99p5
- it would lock up while drawing the title page). The sound's a bit choppy
- (as are most things I've tried so far) but it is intelligible. Well done
- ARDI!
-
- On the other hand, the "Oh No More Lemmings" demo, while it works, is
- dreadfully slow on my home system with 1.99q; the countdown counter
- decrements about every 5 seconds. I admit my home system's not exactly
- cutting edge (486DX-33, 16MB RAM, ET4000-W32 local bus video,
- double-speed SCSI CD-ROM, Soundblaster 16) but I'm sure it should be
- faster. It is a bit faster with p9; the countdown decrements every 2-3
- seconds on that version. The presence (or not) or UniVBE 5.1 makes no
- difference. It's OK on my work machine however, though that's a 486DX2-66
- with no sound card. I will make further tests to see if it's the sound
- support that's causing the slowdown.
-
- The other oddity is that the Crystal Quest 2.2.3 demo will only run in
- B&W mode under 1.99q, even if you delete the .ECF file in the CONFIGUR
- subdir; you can't get to the Cmd-Shift-5 panel. It works in colour under
- p9 though there's no sound in either case.
-
- Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.
