  1. Hi Folks,
  2.  
  3. We have three different machines building 1.99p6, so within a few
  4. hours we should have the first 1.99p6 binaries built.  However, 1.99p6
  5. will require a new System file and a new Browser, so putting together
  6. the actual 1.99p6 releases will still take a bunch of time, and then
  7. they have to be minimally tested, so I don't think you'll see 1.99p6
  8. before late tonight, but you'll probably see it by tomorrow morning
  9. (U.S. times).

  11. In the meantime, I'm trying to get caught up on my e-mail.  I don't
  12. necessarily answer my e-mail in the order in which it's received, but
  13. I do try to answer everything that requires an answer, so don't be
  14. upset if you see me answer someone else's question before I get to
  15. yours.

  17. Here are the changes that 1.99p6 has that I can think of off the top
  18. of my head or can find in one of our log files:
  19.  
  20.     Executor/NEXTSTEP/Motorola support
  21.  
  22.     Browser changes:
  23.  
  24.         zoom boxes
  25.  
  26.         when you open a folder that's already open it doesn't
  27.         create a new window unless you have the Control key down
  28.  
  29.         If you have the option key down when you open a folder,
  30.         the parent is closed
  31.  
  32.         Delete will now delete the file or folder that is
  33.         currently selected
  34.  
  35.         The "Are you sure you want to ..." Alert no longer beeps
  36.         when it comes up
  37.  
  38.         two column listing mode was broken, so it was removed
  39.  
  40.         duplicates are no longer allowed in the hot band
  41.  
  42.         get info on a volume tells how big the volume is and how
  43.         much free space is left
  44.  
  45.         If you move/copy a file in listing mode it no longer creates
  46.         an icon in a field of listings
  47.  
  48.         Cmd-Shift-2 does the equivalent of a check for disks after
  49.         the disk is mounted
  50.  
  51.         Z cursor is turned on when a folder is being opened
  52.  
  53.         "Check for disks" and "Format Disk" are no longer adjacent
  54.  
  55.         When you try to format a floppy that isn't already in Mac
  56.         format you no longer get a confused volume name on the
  57.         screen (e.g. "Do you really want to format dfdaaaaazz")
  58.  
  59.         The about box menu item is now "About Browser" instead of
  60.         "About Go"
  61.     
  62.     makehfv properly recognizes when it is unable to create an HFV
  63.     due to I/O errors or running out of space
  64.  
  65.     A few bug fixes that affect PageMaker 4.2 (and maybe 5.0):
  66.  
  67.         hiliting large text no longer confused
  68.  
  69.         cruft no longer left on screen after dismissing pop-up box
  70.  
  71.         (hmmm... I think there was another, but I can't remember it)
  72.     
  73.     E/L/ELF uses a memory layout that no longer upsets with
  74.     Spaceward Ho
  75.  
  76.     Some keyboard characters that were wrong in DOS and Linux have
  77.     been fixed
  78.  
  79.     Executor won't crash if you let it sit for 10 minutes at the
  80.     splash screen
  81.  
  82.     "-photo" has been replaced with four new checkboxes:
  83.         pretend help
  84.         pretend alias
  85.         pretend edition
  86. and        pretend script
  87.     These things are remembered in configuration files, so you aren't
  88.     stuck in a particular mode like you used to be with "-photo" (i.e.
  89.     if you used "-photo", Photoshop would try to work, but Word would
  90.     fail).  This allows us to supply configuration files for Photoshop
  91.     and GIFconverter (more too, later)
  92.  
  93.     Double-clicking on Stuffit documents should automatically have them
  94.     opened up when Stuffit starts.  Quark XPress, too
  95.  
  96.     Desktop Textures III works
  97.  
  98.     Desktop textures doesn't crash when run in black and white mode
  99.  
  100.     RAM check no longer crashes when you pull down a menu
  101.  
  102.     We no longer use the PostScript Level 2 "rectclip" operator, so
  103.     the PostScript that Executor generates should print on more printers
  104.     and filters (ZScript, for instance)
  105.  
  106.     The bug that prevented black and white icons from being drawn in
  107.     dialog boxes has been fixed
  108.  
  109.     Unexpected ROMlib_error is no longer generated when you try to
  110.     save a file directly to your DOS drive (although you still need
  111.     to be aware of 8.3 limitations)
  112.  
  113.     disabled default buttons no longer have black frames
  114.  
  115.     CyberGif has the right colors
  116.  
  117.     "-nodrivesearch" under Linux will bypass the standard examination
  118.     of /dev/fd0 and /dev/cdrom
  119.  
  120. One area that I had hoped to make more progress on was Photoshop 3.  I
  121. was naively hoping that one particular fix would cure many problems,
  122. but it turned out that although the fix was needed, it didn't help
  123. Photoshop 3 much at all.  We'll try to look at it after 1.99p6 is out.

  125. BTW, we recently purchased a 4 gig disk so we'll be able to test
  126. Executor under Windows NT (thanks to Chris Hedberg) and have room make
  127. our CD-ROM master and have more room for an expanded testing library.
  128. We still have to purchase our CD-R (CD-ROM Recorder) though.
