- Hi folks,
-
- Thanks for all the praise. Most ARDI employees have had to sacrifice
- a lot in the last few years. Since we've required extra support from
- family members who don't necessarily follow the computer industry,
- much less emulation issues, the praise is especially appreciated -- it
- suggests we're doing something right. The better we do our job, the
- harder it is for people who aren't systems level programmers to
- understand the complexity of our job.
-
- However, I think I've left you with a mistaken impression. Although
- there currently are only three people doing the *development* of
- 1.99n, ARDI is more than just the engineers. In addition to Mat
- Hostetter, Cotton Seed and myself, who are the three engineers
- currently working on 1.99n, we usually also have help from engineer
- Bill Goldman, but he's volunteered to take an extended leave without
- pay since our revenues are less than we had hoped. In addition to
- Bill's usual presence, we also have Vaune Fischer doing full-time
- technical support for us and Melissa Algeo as our on-line services
- liason. We also have a good attorney and good CPA, and employ or
- contract additional others to do our bidding.
-
- So although there were three engineers who were in the critical path
- for releasing 1.99n, that by no means should diminish the important
- work other ARDI employees are doing.
-
- As our Linux users may remember, 1.99m had some permission problems.
- We've fixed those in two different ways -- our install procedure
- explicitly makes the appropriate directory writable and our Browser no
- longer dies if it can't write its save files. However, the 1.99m
- fiasco pointed out that we have to spend a little time shaking down
- the final package, even though we've already spent some time testing
- the final binaries.
-
- I need to spend an hour or less reviewing our configuration files,
- then I'll start the final package shakedown for E/L. *If* nothing
- more surprising is found, E/L 1.99n could be out early afternoon (its
- 9:30am now). E/L will be released before E/D because, unlike E/D
- 1.99n, we don't have to squash E/L 1.99n to fit on two HD floppies.
