  3. Normally when someone posts a large file to this list I send private
  4. e-mail explaining that many people pay for their e-mail and the larger
  5. the file, the more they have to pay.  My reasoning is that almost all
  6. of the readership of this group knows this facet of etiquette, and
  7. there's no point closing the barn door after the horse had run away.

  9. However, since in a fairly short time we've had three such posts,
  10. people might be getting the idea that encoding binaries and then
  11. posting them is a good idea.  It's not.  If you have a large file
  12. you'd like to share with others, feel free to mention it on this list,
  13. and if it's already available via anonymous ftp, give a pointer to its
  14. location in your post.

  16. If the file is not already available via anonymous ftp, and you don't
  17. have the facilities to do so, see what kind of reaction your
  18. announcement gets.  If only a few people ask for the file, just e-mail
  19. it to them separately.  If you're inundated, get back to one of us
  20. over here and we'll see about making it available via anonymous ftp
  21. and its mirrors.
