- Dear Folks,
-
- I hate to continue a thread whose basic gist is a plea for
- less traffic in this group, but... The problem is that ARDI doesn't
- know what applications will run under Executor-MSW. ARDI is in a bit
- of a financial crunch, and has been, more or less, since day 0 (about
- five years ago). The details boil basically down to: ARDI expected
- to raise venture capital but wasn't able to because of the
- justifiable fear of lawsuits. Lately ARDI is involved in all sorts
- of deals that can't be mentioned but none of them have yet panned out
- (there's still fear of lawsuits).
-
- A while back we had copies of the top 10 selling applications
- for the Mac. We had to return those copies (no, we didn't do
- anything wrong; that was just part of a deal we had). We have notes
- that date back to when we had the copies, but recently we discovered
- at least one example, and we suspect there are many more :-(, of a
- program that worked fine a while back that now dies mysteriously, so
- we really don't know the status of programs that we don't have access
- to. Right now the "big ticket" applications that we have are:
-
- Word 4.00D
- Excel 3.0
- Excel 3.0A
- Word 5.00
- Fullwrite Professional V? ( I don't recall it's not really a
- concern, but it's what I used to use
- on the Mac and what my mother still
- uses; it doesn't run under Executor
- at all)
-
- Now being a fellow Albuquerquean, as well as being a very
- good friend [he is indirectly, through Lee Ward responsible for me
- bringing Executor to the NeXT; it was developed on Sun equipment],
- and being a fairly omnisicient kinda guy, Andrew knew all of the
- above. So when he asked whether or not Quark ran he was asking the
- right place.
-
- Still, a better solution is needed. Obviously, ARDI needs to
- track this data (until we can get some more Apps, which is already
- planned), so how's this for a new protocol:
-
- If you find out that an Application does or doesn't run, send
- the info to "iclone!stef@unmvax.cs.unm.edu". If you are interested
- in whether or not a particular application runs, send the question to
- stef. If he doesn't know whether or not a particular application
- runs, then it can be assumed that no one on this list knows, or
- she/he would have sent me the information. To make it a little
- easier, Stef will post a brief list describing what runs [and how
- well it runs] (not the monster data I sent out earlier) every two
- weeks. So information doesn't fall through the cracks there will be
- a reminder of what the policy is and a list of applications that
- people have asked about that hasn't been answered (just in case
- someone is inadvertantly sitting on this information). Someone can
- then put a copy of this list on the NeXT servers on the InterNet.
-
- With luck that will help everyone out.
